Sometimes depression gets so bad that you can't see any way out.
In the end, she wanted to live.
It was good for her that this officer was not only a hero, but observant. He might have driven right past her and kept going. The next day he'd have heard about it and thought, "I saw her."

Maybe she can get some help now. Then she can move past whatever it was.
