    For a flu outbreak.
But in the event of a widespread pandemic, the Pentagon maintains standing plans to use the active-duty military as a last-resort force to help law enforcement manage quarantines, limit state-to-state travel and restrict access to government buildings
In extreme cases, however, the president can invoke the Insurrection Act, also from the Civil War, which allows the use of active-duty or National Guard troops for law enforcement.<----this caught my eye.

Under the military's pandemic plan, the key goals are to defend the country, maintain the force and provide whatever support is needed to protect the national infrastructure and ensure that the government continues to function.

Rock, who recently was named commandant of the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base, said states generally would turn first to police, border control officers and the National Guard under the governors' command. Those public safety officials would be the first line of defense to stem the spread of the virus through travel restrictions at the borders and along state lines or outbreak areas.

The military, however, would be prepared to aid in establishing "mass casualty" treatment sites, provide shelter for displaced persons, dispose of dead bodies and help provide postal, power, water and sewer services and food deliveries. Troops also could provide logistics, communications and other support for law enforcement and the National Guard.

Pentagon flu pandemic response plan gives military larger role, but it expected Asian source - WXIN
By the way the CDC confirmed that there are an estimated 100,000 probable cases in the United States with 22 states having pandemic levels of the flu. Is it a bad flu,no. But some ER rooms in Texas and California are unable to take new patients.
WHO estimates 2 BILLION will be infected H1N1.
Chris Smith, at flu virologist at Cambridge University in England, said the 2 billion estimate was possible.
"That doesn't sound too outlandish to me for the simple reason that this is a very infectious virus," Smith told The Associated Press. "You're talking about a virus that no one in the population has seen before and therefore everyone is immunologically vulnerable. Therefore it's highly likely that once it starts to spread, people will catch it. And since the majority of the world's population are in contact with one another, you're going to get quite a lot of spread."
John Oxford, professor of virology at St. Bart's and Royal London Hospital, agreed.
"I don't think the 2 billion figure should scare people because it's not as though 2 billion people are going to die. The prediction from WHO is that 2 billion people will catch it.

That is 30% of the people in the world. If the mortality rate is .5% that is 10,000,000 dead. I hear quite a few saying the media is over blowing it. But if 10 million die perhaps they are not saying enough. The mortality rate for the normal flu is around .2%(which would mean only 4 million dead),for the pandemic of 1918 it was 2.5%

Please keep in mind that the 1918 pandemic (ie the "Spanish Flu", only called that because the first reported cases came from Spain) WAS THE H1N1 VIRUS THAT MUTATED OVER SEVERAL MONTHS. About 80 - 100 million people died workwide, about 500,000 to 675,000 died in the US. There were so many dead that is some cases they burned the bodies with flamethrowers...

And also keep in mind that this was before "modern medicine". Even an OTC drug to keep a fever down would've been enough to save all kinds of folks.

interestingly enough, aspirin did exist at that time and i have read some people claiming that aspirin actually increased the mortality rate by "supressing" the immune system. while that may be possible in some cases, these same retards also dont realize that once your temp gets to 104, you are in danger of having your brain melt. :D

if it happens, it happens. i personally believe this is one of the signs of the zombie apocalypse. other signs include the 2012-mayan calender thing ,President Obama (reelection in 2012? mayan calender? :n00b:), etc, etc:D
