This happened about eleven years ago. Appalachian School of Law is a small, private law school in the mountains of western Virginia. The surrounding town has a population of about 800. The shooter, a Nigerian national, had just flunked out, and so killed the Dean, and another professor. Upon hearing shots, two other students (both law enforcement, but I believe out of state) ran to their cars for their personal firearms--separate from each other. They tackled the shooter and detained him until police arrived.

Seldom do we see stories like this. To those who might ask, yes, this did happen before the Virginia Tech Shooting.

This will never be widely disseminated as it doesn't fit the current narrative.

Current narrative being something like this: You don't have a right to protect yourself, the cops will protect you, and if they don't protect you and you die instead, then you can rest easy knowing you were a good little sheep, and gave your contribution to society by keeping the insurance rates down and advancing the cause of socialism over freedom.

When this happened, it was pretty well known that students stopped the guy, but because they were also deputies, it was kind of lost in the shuffle. What we can glean from this incident is an example for argument's sake: this is what can happen when firearms are present in "gun-free zones."

I don't remember any rhetoric at the time, but use this as an example as a talking point, and include it in discourse moving forward. This man was stopped, but not executed (whatever we want to have happened). These two heroes violated a "gun-free zone," and each on their own ran to their cars to retrieve their weapons when they heard shots fired.

Virginia and Indiana have liberal applications of gun laws (that's liberal, with a lower-case "l," not Liberal, with a capital "L"). This incident could have, and in my opinion would have been much worse had it not been for these brave men with their firearms on this campus. The Commonwealth agreed. I remember that they were seen as the heroes that they were.
