Reading this thread made my heart race!
Early on I was told to never point an "unloaded" gun anywhere but toward the ground, since it is always "unloaded" in a person's mind when they test the trigger and it goes off.
I have had experienced grown men (a friend) who shot himself cleaning a rifle: I never forgot that. Fortunately, a small caliber, not a shotgun.
Once, I got a .22LR semi-automatic back from a gunsmith 30 yrs. ago, to fix something: he left a bullet in the chamber.
I was stunned!!! I never dreamed that was possible from professionals.
I called them, quite shaken up to let them know, and of course, they denied that could have happened.

A guy sent his wife to a class I was teaching with a Ruger MK III semi auto. I dropped an empty mag out and proceeded to clear it by running the bolt a few times to be "certain". When I visually checked it there was a round stuck in the chamber. NEVER assume the people you are dealing with know what they are doing. When I'm teaching I teach the 4 rules but stress the first rule, treat everything like it's loaded and the rest of the rules are common sense. If folks aren't blessed with common sense simply remembering to treat every firearm like it's loaded will save you a ton of grief.
