Mouse is right about the old school mothballs, naphthalene is one of those useful chemicals from the past.

Unfortunately I am seeing a lot more chewed up wiring these days at work, I have fixed the Boss' Honda several times for this. Honda makes a rodent repelling tape that is infused with the active ingredient in pepper Spray, but the stuff costs $45 a roll! Plus it only protects your repair, not all that nice tasty fresh wiring a foot away. Several companies make a spray on repellent with the same capsicum base for about $20 a quart spray bottle. Spray down your engine compartment and have your oil change guy get any exposed wiring underneath and you should be protected for a while. I just wonder what will happen next time some mechanic touches your wiring then scratches his nose or rubs his eye...

You also have to worry about them gaining access to the interior, one I had to repair under the hood for chewed wiring ran about $400, the owner was happy because last time they had gotten under the dash and did $3K worth of damage!

Frontier finally made it out after 2 weeks to fix my internet, it would quit from about 10 AM to about 7pm. After 2 attempts and 1 1/2 hours it is working again. When I asked what was wrong they said tree rats.

I've had squirrels, ants, mice, rats, and birds all cause telecom outages at sites over the years. If something is accessible to nature, nature will take a poke at it.
