Wouldn't that effect the fire rating?
    Depends on the safe.
no, its just carpet on thick cardboard (original liner). The fire rating is from the thickness of the steel used on the door and the material between where the door latches with the safe.

Depends on the safe. Steel doors (at least those used in ANY safe anyone other Bill Gates would have in their home) on safes offer zero fire protection. The rating comes from the liner inside, what most people would call cardboard. The seal (expanding plastic/foam) seals some heat out as well as smoke.

In my safe, it's basically carpeted dry wall, lol. I have a decent rating (as far as safes go) so it's a bit thicker than most 1/2" or so, but if you took "carpeted cardboard" off your safe, chances are you removed the fire protection as well. Some safes that offer "15 minutes" used 1/16" drywall, lol.
