Police officer raises money for device to help his son walk

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Michael Darst is a 13-year veteran of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. On Oct. 30th, Darst fired the fatal shot that killed Alfred Ferrell.According to investigators, Ferrell fired the first shot at Officer Darst, who returned fire killing the 27-year-old.
“I still have nightmares,” Darst says.
After being placed on administrative leave, Darst is back on the beat. Now the husband and father of three is turning his attention to his youngest son.
Colton Darst, 1, suffers from a rare joint disease called Arthrogryposis. The disease literally curves his joints, which causes muscle weakness in his hands and feet. One doctor believes Colton will never walk again.
Despite that, it hasn’t stopped the Darst family from trying to seek treatment for their youngest son.
“Our goal is to one day to get him walking by the time he is five or four,” Darst says.
Currently, the family is trying to raise $15,000 for a device that will help Colton use his hands and arms. However, funding the experimental device is quite costly and is an expensive price tag for a family of five living on a police officer’s salary.
Recently, the family created a website on GiveForward. It’s a fundraising site that has raised more than $72 million for various families with different medical needs.
So far the family has raised $9,000. They are hoping to raise $6,000 more in fifteen days.
