Thought this might be interesting to all of you. The Porter County Museum (in Indiana) received a machine gun donation recently.

Museum curator surprised by gun donation :: Porter County :: Post-Tribune

Just in case this ever suffers from link-rot (if post-trib.com removes the page from their site at any point in the future), here is a summary of the article:

    • A year ago a man from Westchester, Illinois passed away and his widow's brother (from Lakes of the Four Seasons, Indiana) discovered the machine gun. He checked with the ATF and found out it was not registered.
    • The article mentions that someone in the ATF who knew Sheriff David Lain of Porter County, Indiana called him about finding a home for it (Lakes of the Four Seasons is in this county)and Sheriff Lain suggested the museum. The article implies that the process of working with the museum took several weeks. The museum didn't know they were getting a machine gun until the day of the donation.

Heard about that on the news. It was donate or melt. Glad they decided to donate, chopping/melting something like that with so much history would have made me kind of upset.
