Anyone have suggestions for an inexpensive power supply for etching/anodizing? Will be used for aluminum.

You can do it with a 12vdc car battery charger (manual type) or you can PM and I have a bunch of power supplies 5vd,12vdc,24vdc and up from my father's estate that I am liquidating. I can hook you up! I am just 3 miles outside terre haute (north).

I vaguely remember hearing about a place where you prepay for a power supply, wait months and months, and it just never shows up.

That depends what your requirements are. IIRC good AL etching machines use AC current. You can make your own variable power AC power supply by using an AC transformer connected to a wall outlet and adding a light dimmer in-line on the high-side. Turning the light dimmer up/down turns down the output side by roughly the same proportion.

DC power supplies are much more readily available and you likely can make the same variable power modification with a light dimmer on the input side.
