We bought a house last fall that had a large cedar playset. It has a nice tree canopy over it and is a perfect breeding ground for algae/moss/mold, etc...

2700psi later, look at the progress.

now, what do you guys think about using the powerwasher on an old bell to get the paint/rust cleaned up before I paint it again? I'm assuming it's iron. This is the mounting bracket I'll put on the 4x4 that the bell rests on.

Powerwashers are just plain cool, provided you keep your fingers and other body parts out of the way.

Be careful with the pressure washer! Too small of a tip, or too close to the wood, it's easy to scar and really damage soft woods like cedar! Use a cleaner or a bleach solution to kill the mildew, then rinse thoroughly. Best to clean and seal at LEAST every two years! I usually at least two coat the sealer every time I refinish a deck, fence, etc.

Yeah, you can clean the iron bracket with your pressure washer too, but by the looks of the picture, you can probably wire brush any rust, sand the whole thing, use a "rust converter" on any light rust that remains, Paint two coats of a good oil (alkyd) based paint, or a high quality acrylic semi gloss, again at least two coats!

that is cast iron, but i would sand blast it for repainting. a presure washer is not going to remove the rust which will just show back up if its not completely removed before painting.

I was hoping to power wash only because I don't have access to a sandblaster. This bell has been outside for about 15 years and really has no special meaning to me. Is it worth the expense of rehabbing it? I honestly am not sure what a bell with a 12" diameter or so would cost in cast iron.

Regarding the cedar, I used the white 40-degree nozzle and stayed 4-5 inches away. I got too close in a few places while going fast but overall not bad at all. I'm going to have my dad seal it (already gave 1000 rounds 9mm as prepayment last fall :)

Something definitely failed but I'm not convinced it was the thread.

You and this thread have failed miserably. This has been tried before right here on INGO https://www.indianagunowners.com/forums/break_room/133415-semi_driver_mangles_school_buses.html :noway::noway:

serpicostraight is an ass and should be banned, he brings nothing of value to this site. NOTHING. That's what you should have made this thread about, not his chosen profession.

I know his kind, he is the guy in the back of the truck stop looking for lot lizards EVERY NIGHT. He's the guy who tries to back into the easiest spot 20 times before giving up and parking next the scales. Then he goes into the truck stop and brags about how good of a driver he is. He probably works for Swift or Schneider because nobody else will hire him. I'm even willing to bet his wife left him for another woman. Probably a woman cop. That would explain a lot now wouldn't it?

Now Phylodog, I'm not sure if you've ever read any of my posts or not. I have spent time defending cops when they were right and bashing the ones who were wrong. Here is the last cop thread I have posted in https://www.indianagunowners.com/fo...cussion/200464-another_punk_with_a_badge.html I see you even posted in there. As far as I know only 1 truck driver was bashing cops there and 1 truck driver was defending cops. When will you look into the professions of everyone else and bash them?

Now Phylodog is on the same worthless list as serpicostraight.

Interestingly enough I logged in a week ago to look into become an advertiser on this site and came across this thread first. I'm glad I did, I wouldn't want to spend my money not only supporting this site but advertising on it also. Sucks for INGO that those 2 morons are making this site lose money now.

Now for everyone wanting to see a shooter. Here's your chance, ban me PLEASE so I wont even be tempted to come back. I can start spewing off 4 letter words if you need me to. One way or another you will have to ban me and while your at it ban my IP I will get my gun news from somewhere else.

You should always use a cleaner on wood to clean it first, then use no more then 1,500 psi to rinse.

I bought the wood/deck cleaner from HD and soaked it in that first. the white nozzle I'm sure it much less than the max 2700psi, I just wanted to sound like a man. The blue nozzle is the lowest pressure for soap application.

the nitpicking on here is actually helpful in my home improvement work. thanks for the advice on the bell. I was thinking of painting it a different color too since black makes it look too much like a glock.

the bell is worth saving. Buy some rust remover and a wire brush for a drill. hit it as much as you can w/ the wire brush to get the loose paint/dirt/rust off, then spray it w/ rust remover and let it sit for a day, then scrub it w/ a wire brush and alchohol, acetone, paint thinner or similar let dry and paint. thats almost as good as sandblasting.

A bell might be on the large side for trying this, but if you have the materials around & place to make one...try an electrolysis rust removal tank.
I've been useing a homebuilt tank on rusty parts for years & it works great.

I built mine out of a 40 gallon plastic container, used 4 2"x1/4" thick sacrificial anodes the depth of the barrel spaced on four sides & power it with a 10amp battery charger.

It will remove rust, free up rusty mechanisms, remove paint, grease....for what I do I prefer it over sand blasting because there is less mess & you don't have to do anything short of putting the item in the tank.

    Worth a try...
