So after a rifle safety class this past weekend I got a bug to build a precision rifle. I am looking for advise on caliber specifically and then any other considerations.

    Requirements:
AR style - I have a bolt Savage 110 FCPK already but after shooting several AR style precision rifles I really like them so want one :D
Caliber - I am wanting precision first and foremost, flat shooting, distance out to 1000 yards potentially and yes I reload so no issue on more obscure calibers (not opposed to another 556 if everyone thinks that's the best option

This is just for fun precision shooting project and AR project build (enjoy building them from ground up)

    Thoughts? Recommendations??

    Thanks Everyone :ingo:

If you want to stay with the ar15 platform I would look at the 6.5 grendal.

If you want the ar10 platform Id look at the 260 remington.

Thanks Alan...I was hoping you would comment :)

Is there an advantage in platform? (AR15 vs. AR10?) I don't currently own an AR10 rifle but not opposed to one if it is the better option here.

    The 219
6.5 Grendel would be (well it is) my pick.

Currently building one as we speak. Bolts and Barrels are hard to come by right now, but they are slowly starting to show up. Got my bolt from LBC last week, now just waiting on a barrel.

The advantage of the ar 10 is better calilbers like the 260. The advantage of the ar 15 is modularity and price. What's most important is up to you

Thanks everyone for the input. After Alan's recommendation then a chat with Andrew at Profire I have decided 260 Rem in an AR10 platform is my next build.

Working with Andrew to get a MEGA ARMS MATEN AR-10 billet upper/lower set to kick the build off :D

If you are wanting to strike 1000 yards lean towards a 308 platform (AR10) build. The 308 is great because everyone has parts/barrels/etc. The 6.5's offer crazy good results (260 remington and 6.5 creedmoor). The downside to the 6.5's are that they sometimes have gas issues meaning you would need an adjustable gas block to dial in correctly. The nice thing about 6.5CM vs 260rem is that you can extend C.O.L slightly to get better accuracy results if you reload. The 260 and 308 are really confined by the internal magazine length. IMO.

Finally got me new baby built. I have always wanted a "nice" gun so here she is. I am very happy with how it turned out. Hoping to get to range early next week to stretch her legs.

    Details:
260 Remington on an AR10 platform
Mega Maten matched upper and lower
JP 260 Remington Match barrel and comp
JP Handguard and the red is a JP heat sink for the barrel
    JP enhanced BCG
    Magpul PRS stock
    Vortex Viper PST 6-24 Scope

A big Thanks to Andrew and Alan for their help and suggestions in putting it together...now on to the gun porn.

Thanks Guys! I am really excited to shoot it soon.

Yes 8 twist. I have some factory 120gr to use to get on paper, site in and function test then going to work up a custom load probably using 140 gr.

every gun is different obviously, but I have 3 260's. All of them have loved Nosler brass, 43gr of H4350, and a 140 amax. Take this info for what its worth. They are all bolt guns.

Thats a pretty warm load. You might want to start at 41-41.5ish to be on the safe side. My hunting load is 43.5, but I lost primer pockets after 3 firings so I backed it off to 43 even

LOL...yes that was my plan to use your info as a guide not an absolute  I was going to refer to some reloading manuals as well...don't want to blow up the gun just yet.
