Have been wondering what it means to have been counter bored and are the pen marks on the ones in the stores not as collectable. I have 2, a carbine and rifle and all the numbers match. Just didn't know if the pen marks make the value go down. :patriot:

Counter boring is the drilling out of the muzzle to get back to better rifling in the bore. This is supposed to help the rifle shot better. Can not help you on the pens marks have not seen them or heard about them.

You're talking about the electropenciling. After the War, the rifles went to various armories to be refurbished and returned to service. If a part was too worn out and there was no new replacement, they would take a part from another rifle and electropencil the serial number into it, crossing out the old serial number in the process. The four main parts that get serialized are the receiver, the magazine, the bolt, and the stock (on the butt plate). Electropenciled rifles are not as collectible because it means they are not all original parts. That said, Mosins are so cheap that I'm not sure they're all that "collectible" regardless.

From what I understand, the Russians counter bored all the rifles they re-arsenaled. Also the damage to the crown was due to the steel cleaning rod as well as normal wear. The cleaning kits have a cap that fits over the muzzle to keep the rod from contacting the crown.
