I have a friend that has this cap and ball gun that he would like someone to look at to see if it is functional and worth anything. It has stamped on the brass HERO M.F.A. Co.

All input to help him out is appreciated.

Well, I am no longer a gunsmith, I let my license go as I was tired and had health issues that told me to let it go.

It looks OK to me but would have to look at it in person to be sure. I would go ahead and put a light charge into it and shoot it but that is me.

Take care and I am sure others will chime in and help you out.

    ^ This.
Most muzzle loaders, unless obviously damaged, are almost impossible to over-charge.
Too much powder (black powder equivalent) will just produce extra smoke and unburned powder being ejected.

If you're worried about pressures, try loading a small powder charge behind nothing more than a wad.
The powder will still burn but you'll get almost no chamber pressure.

Your pistol looks fine to me.
Clean it (nipple too) and shoot it.

To load, the barrel unscrews, you fill the cavity with black powder, place a lead ball on top and screw the barrel back on. Probably about 15 grains of powder.

Dixie gunworks makes a modern replica. It comes with a tool to remove the barrel easily.
