In my 9mm, 124gn recipe I took from the Hornady Manual.

The powder I’m using is Power Pistol. When I go to their website, I see a significant different charge weight.

    Which do you follow?

Also, does the case and primer have an impact on charge weight as I notice the recipe lists specific cases.

    Thanks in advance.

When starting something new, I reference the current data and loads from as many component manufacturers that I can and find the overlap and charge weights. Then use that to determine a low starting point and work up from there with careful attention paid to velocity and pressure signs. I tend to load conservatively…

Sometimes (though not recently) I will look back at my old reloading books from the 70s and 80s - those are almost always higher loads.

I think lawyers and insurers write reloading manuals today.

Maybe list your component list and charge weights you were considering here and see what others loading similar think about it?

Insert all safe reloading caveats here.

From the Hornady Manual, it lists:

    FMJRN 5.0-1000 fps : 5.3-1050 fps : 5.7-1100 fps

From the Power Pistol Guide (powder I am using)

    GDHP 124

    6.4-1157 fps

I am using a round point hollow base projectile from Berry’s Bullets.

Berrys are Plated and have limits on velocity. 1000 or so FPS should do the trick. Are you looking for higher velocity? If so, any particular reason?

I do read velocity and typically choose the middle of the road velocity when provided multiple options.

While I do shoot matches. I am also very new to the sport, so I highly doubt velocity differences at my level would make much difference.

I just purchased some acme coated bullets. So I’ll try switching to these for cost purposes.

Speer (just as reference) lists a range of 5.6 at 1033 to 6.4 at 1157 for their 124 gn TMJ-RN.

If you are using plated bullets from Berry's, I would agree with Magyars.

Start around 5 or so and see what numbers you get on a ladder up to say 5.8 or 6. Again, I am not one to chase max velocity. Give me a load that does what the intended use is and stay there.

Personally, I'd look for about 1050-1075 fps in 124 gn 9mm in a 4" pistol? It has been a minute since I have loaded 9 so going off memory here...so....insert all safe reloading caveats here.
