Thinking about buying a bolt action rifle, but i dont want to spend a fortune and i want one that is accurate! I'm thinking under 500$ and caliber wise, i like affordable, but i like a little recoil, and itd also be nice to know that i could possibly hunt with it (maybe outa state, u know)...just wondering what u guys think a good entry biolt gun would be, ive never owned one before.

Well, I recently purchased a Ruger American in 308 Win. Ruger has been coming out with other calibers. I recommend you get a bolt gun in a caliber of another gun you may already own. My Ruger American cost me 359.00 before taxes. I really like that rifle.

Oh, a week after I bought my Ruger, I lost it in a poker game. Darn the luck.

The only real luck you would have is (for $500) is finding a used 700, the odds are good tho, there are zillions of them on the planet, the trouble is, right now, everyone thinks everything is gold.
    good luck

How about a Savage Hog Hunter? Think about it...it comes standard in 3 calibers, .223, .308, .338!
    Model 11/111 standard with Accu-trigger
20" med contour barrel already threaded.
A bonus that I like, Iron sights
    Large bolt handle
The worst thing in my opinion would be the cheap tupperware stock!
But at $450 its not a bad option!

Savage axis has a package at dicks that includes a scope.

I bought this package when it was called "Savage Edge". They are more than worth the money. Sub MOA all day long. Caliber would be your choice, but it comes with a mounted Bushnell 3-9 scope. The scope isn't anything to brag about, but it does track and the clarity is good. Word of caution... it will say it's boresighted at 100... it's probably not. Mine was shooting about 6 feet high out of the box.

i just got my first bolt gun (in layaway), after couple months of research and looking. I ended up with a savage 10 presicion carbine. It was more than what your looking to spend but from what ive seen your best bet, at that price range, would be a savage combo. They have some decent ones with a nikon prostaff scope. Like stated before the stock is kinda weak, but you can always change it later. Just my opinion.

Go to the big box gun stores and dry fire the ones you are considering.
Thought I wanted a Savage Axis until I dry fired it, trigger is just terrible.
The accutrigger is so much better but it cost a bit more. The Savavge mod 11 .243 with nice Nikon scope was less than $600 for a lefty, probably less for a normal gun. I know you are not supposed to dry fire, but I really did not want to find out after i spent $500 that the trigger pulled like a double action revolver.

Hunt what in what type of terrain? If I may ask.

Savage Axis and Marlin X7 fit your price range. With a $150 Redfield 3-9x40 scope. Low recoiling chamberings for those rifles would be .223 Rem, .243 Win, and maybe .25-06 and 7mm-08.

If this is a whitetail deer only rifle, then I would go with the 7mm-08, maybe the .25-06. If a mix of varmints/predators and pronhorn/deer then the .243 or the .25-06. But if all you care about is dead varmints, there's no reason the 7mm-08 won't work with the right bullet. For varmints/predators and no deer, the .223 Rem or .243 Win. If you plan to hunt anything larger than whitetail (like mule deer, caribou, or elk) then the 7mm-08 would be my choice.

Look into the Remington 700 SPS. They can be had for about $500. Otherwise check into the Ruger american for about $330. If there is one piece of advice you take from any post: DO NOT settle for a Remington 770. I hate those things.
