just wanted to get some input from those that are a bit more knowledgeable then myself. i looking at buying a new Remington 597 .22lr for plinking and eventually teaching my kids to shoot with. i have the option to get the package with either the red dot or a traditional cross hair style scope for the same price. I would like to know which would be the better route to go. what are the advantages/disadvantages one why or the other?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had both on my 10/22 that I use for plinking and gr. hogs. Paper shooting and time to get lined up on gr. hogs scope was fine. I switched to the red dot and like it so much better for quick shots and the occasional moving shot. The red dot is quicker to line up behind and you don't need to be directly behind it. It all comes down to personal choice.
