I need some help regarding a cap n ball revolver I saw for sale today. It's listed as a Remington 1860 Army .44 and I don't know anything about these old guns. I'm interested in buying it but not if it's just a reproduction import. It's not in a gunshop so I couldn't ask about details of it. I took a look at it and didn't notice any markings except the ".44" on the side. The thing looks excellant which worries me. It's priced at $270. If anyone knows about these and could lend advice I'd appreciate it. Thanks:popcorn:

I can't tell from the picture whether its an import or not. My cap and ball revolvers all have stampings on the barrel. All of mine are imports. I can pretty safely say that the gun in the pic has got some years on it. Uberti is a big importer of reproduction handguns, rifles, and shotguns from the old west period. I do believe the Remington is actually the 1858 and not the 1860. I know you said you don't want and import gun, but you can get a brand new 1858 Remington .44 copy from Cabela's online for cheaper than $270. My cap and ball revolvers are imports and are excellent shooters.

This is the reproduction of the 1858 Remington: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Black-Powder/Pistols-Revolvers%7C/pc/104792580/c/104701680/sc/104503680/Pietta-Model-1858-New-Army-44-Caliber-Revolver/731695.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fshooting-black-powder-pistols-revolvers%2F_%2FN-1100201%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104503680%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat104792580%253Bcat104701680%26recordsPerPage%3D72&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat104792580%3Bcat104701680%3Bcat104503680

This is the reproduction of the 1858 Remington: Cabela's: Pietta Model 1858 New Army .44 Caliber Revolver

Ya I appreciate the info. I guess I just need to know what to look for to confirm it's a Remington and also the age. I think you're right about the Remington being an 1858 as I saw that online. Hopefully others will chime in on this.

Reproduction. Every original I have personally seen the grip screw escuchions are shaped different. And orignals are worth way more that the price you mentioned.

agreed....it would be an 1858, which leads me to believe the seller probably doesn't know much about them/it....it simply looks to be in far too god of condition wood, sheen, bluing, etc for an original production.....yes the blue can be redone and wood replaced but even if that is what happened to it...it pretty much destroys the value of the gun anyhow
