Just seen the Remington 770 with scope for $299. I know the 700 is the better rifle. Wondering what others think about the 770's?

Honestly the 770 is pretty much junk. If you do a search on here there is a few threads about it. The trigger is horrible the bolt rattles etc.

Right now dicks has a camo 700 varmint with 4-12 scope for $450 or a savage axis with scope for$330

For the money you cant go wrong with the savage axis. I have one in 308 and it has been a very good gun.

Never heard much myself on the 770. Kinda good info to know though. Guess I won't buy one of these in the future

Guys the 770 is nothing pretty to look at. The bolt is sloppy. The trigger sucks. And yet the thing is a great shooter. Anybody that says it doesn't put bullets where the crosshairs are probably hasn't shot one.

Yes you can get a nicer gun for a touch more money, but what is the goal here? If you want a Cadillac go buy one. If you want the most affordable, ready to shoot bolt action out there then the 770 will work for you.

I have one and i agree they are nothing pretty to look at and they are more on the rough side (not a super slick trigger or bolt by any stretch). BUT it is not uncommon for me to put a group together of 2" at 250-300 yards. They are a shooter not a looker. Dont pass them by so quickly. I might just pull my out of the safe and do some trigger work on it and fix the few problems it actually does have.

For just a little more money, you can get a 700 ADL that will be a WAY better rifle. In my opinion, it's a shame Remington would put their name on such a ****ty rifle.

I asked the same question a few weeks ago as the Gander Mountain grand opening at Lafayette was advertizing one for $299.95 with scope. I was thinking of buying one in the .300 mag caliber. All the answers I got indicated it was not worth the money. I don't know - but the bolt is sloppy and the trigger was rough. They didn't have one in .300 mag anyway, but decided that if I do buy I would rather pay a little more for a 700 or Savage. Instead I am currently building a LR-308 so will wait a while to add another to my collection.

i was looking to purchase a rifle in 7mm Rem Mag and i looked at many 770's because of the price tag, ultimately, i went with the 700 cdl because i wanted a rifle and not a cheap excuse for a rifle that puts bullets downrange. the bolt is a mess on the 770's

I have a 700 and my buddy has a 770. Both are 30-06. 770 is the same action as a 700 with a 2 inch shorter barrel and a bottom loading mag. Trigger is the same. These were Walmart guns. 100 dollars for no mag(top loader) and 2 inch longer barrel. We both love them.

I put a Boyds thumb hole stock on my 700. It's awesome!

Save the extra 80-100$ and get a savage. You will thank us. I had a 770 and it felt like it was made by someone with feet for hands. The bolt was sloppy, and would catch if not pushed in perfectly straight. Trigger felt like there was asphalt cured in there.

Now my savage, has a great action ( its the 700 I believe), great trigger, good recoil pad, and it can shoot like no tomorrow

The only thing that is the same, is both are bolt action. There are some major differences between the two.

I have a Remington 710 in 7mm rem mag. (Same rifle as a 770, just different stock and barrel, I believe.) It was my first bolt gun, and was on clearance for $239. Knowing what I know now, I probably would have bought a 700, (I have one now!), but since I had $300 in Gander gift cards saved up, It's not bad at all for a free rifle! The Bolt sucks, the trigger is bad, but can be worked on fairly easily, but it will shoot MOA, at 200yards, with a decent scope. (The bushnell they come with is NOT a decent scope! It's barely more than an air rifle scope, so don't consider that as much of a perk, as it's included, because you'll be replacing it, as soon as you shoot it past 100 yards! It's a good enough scope to throw on a .22, or an air rifle! Mine ended up on my sons keystone cricket .22!)

If you're gonna go with a cheap bolt action, the Savage Axis is better than the 710/770. Better yet is saving and getting a Stevens 200 or Savage 11 package gun, or a 700 ADL.

I admit to being a Savage fanboy, but the 710/770 is crap built to a price point while the Axis is marginally better than crap built to a price point.

Really. I have had the 2 guns side by side. Adjusted both triggers. The two I have handled are the same action. Maybe the Walmart 700/770's are different then other marketed 700/770? I kind of doubt it though. If I get a chance I will have my buddy bring his over for photo's.

Both of these are 30-06. The stocks are totally different. The barrel lengths are different. The bolts, triggers and receivers are the same. :dunno: The manual that came with my 700 covers both 770 and 700. We bought them about 2 weeks apart last summer.

The lugs on your 770's bolt lock into the action rather than the barrel?

Your 770 has a recoil lug sandwiched between the barrel and the action?
