Shotguns were created to propel large quantities of small pellets or "shot" for the purposes of taking small, thin skinned flying and running animals. Rifles were created to propel a single large projectile accurately at distance for the purpose of taking larger game. So the real question is why would anyone willfully choose a weapon not designed for the task at hand over a weapon not only specifically designed for that task but far better at it if they had the choice?

IMO, emptying a bead "sighted" pump shotgun at any deer that runs by is far worse and more dangerous than taking a 300 yard shot with a rifle that at least has actual sights but idiots will be idiots regardless of the weapon they use.

Smoothbore shotguns can do quite well with fosters, 150 yard rig IMHO.
Scopes and rifled bores/sabots........smaller groups and more consistent bullet results (travel through on line intended).

Sure some rubes still use crap rigs. And some also use rifled bores with mixed ammo and see through rings etc.
But quite a few take this sheite seriously and have some pretty good setups, and know how to use them.

The weekend warrior............always a problem, no matter what gear choice.

I had mentioned this in some of the other threads. Independently of these changes, I have seen an increase in the last couple of years in trespassing and poaching in and around our property, including me having to run the same guy off multiple times. It will be interesting to see what effect this law has on that. On the one hand maybe it will decrease in that some folks that felt the need to trespass to get to that real good patch of woods so they can get close enough for a shot-gun shot can now hunt on their own property and take a bit longer range shot.

On the other hand, if they were already willing to break the law by trespassing and / or poaching, they probably weren't all that concerned about using a legal caliber to take the deer with anyway. And they might feel even more temptation to take a longer range shot onto someone else's property. So it might not have any effect at all since people that are going to break the law anyway probably won't take the time to read this one either.
Pressing charges usually gets their attention. At least in my experience.

    So a 308 is legal
A 308 necked down to 243 is legal
    A 30-06 is legal
But a 30-06 necked down to 270 (which has ballistics between 308 and 30-06) is ILLEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!

    Idiocy at its finest.

Good to see 300 is so open ended, though. I'll be working up a custom chamber to neck down a 50 BMG to .300.

Don't laugh to much, because I don't know weather or not you may have known this but someone did neck down a .50 cal BMG to .338 it was called, you guessed it 338/50BMG. IIRC didn't get very far because again IIRC it suffered severe throat erosion after only a few shots. Talk about being "over bored".

I remember hearing about something a bit more outrageous and impractical some years ago, even before it was given the name it is now known as here: .22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer

With the option this year to use hi-power rifles. I see the 200 yard range at the Winamac FWA range being very popular this year. At least for those of us that do not have private land to use.

I was just getting ready to post this list! I'm glad they opened it up to 30-40 Krag. I wonder if they know that 7.62x39 and 7.62x54 use .311 projectiles, not .308. :) I was also a little surprised to see 30 carbine on the list. I was thinking it had been legal out of a handgun, but didn't know it was now on the rifle list. :yesway:

So, they've been hanging out at a gun store, have they? Are they also reporting that the lifetime LTCH is going away?

I am highly dubious about this report. We'll see.

.300 Blackout will be a fine addition to the already legal AR-15 calibers. And now the AR-10 and the M1A in .308 will be good to go for us. Ak-47 and SKS allowed too. It is a good day for MSR's. Pretty soon the rules will be .243 and up so we can use all the other rifle calibers that got skipped this year. I can't wait for .270, 7mm-08, and .280 to be legal.
