Even I believe that one can be a complete idiot as to legal interpretation, but still a safe hunter.
At times I'm not quite sure why I believe it, but...
By watching their interpretations of legal on forums?
Shotguns were created to propel large quantities of small pellets or "shot" for the purposes of taking small, thin skinned flying and running animals. Rifles were created to propel a single large projectile accurately at distance for the purpose of taking larger game. So the real question is why would anyone willfully choose a weapon not designed for the task at hand over a weapon not only specifically designed for that task but far better at it if they had the choice?
IMO, emptying a bead "sighted" pump shotgun at any deer that runs by is far worse and more dangerous than taking a 300 yard shot with a rifle that at least has actual sights but idiots will be idiots regardless of the weapon they use.
Pressing charges usually gets their attention. At least in my experience.I had mentioned this in some of the other threads. Independently of these changes, I have seen an increase in the last couple of years in trespassing and poaching in and around our property, including me having to run the same guy off multiple times. It will be interesting to see what effect this law has on that. On the one hand maybe it will decrease in that some folks that felt the need to trespass to get to that real good patch of woods so they can get close enough for a shot-gun shot can now hunt on their own property and take a bit longer range shot.
On the other hand, if they were already willing to break the law by trespassing and / or poaching, they probably weren't all that concerned about using a legal caliber to take the deer with anyway. And they might feel even more temptation to take a longer range shot onto someone else's property. So it might not have any effect at all since people that are going to break the law anyway probably won't take the time to read this one either.
So a 308 is legal
A 308 necked down to 243 is legal
A 30-06 is legal
But a 30-06 necked down to 270 (which has ballistics between 308 and 30-06) is ILLEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!
Idiocy at its finest.
Good to see 300 is so open ended, though. I'll be working up a custom chamber to neck down a 50 BMG to .300.
Don't laugh to much, because I don't know weather or not you may have known this but someone did neck down a .50 cal BMG to .338 it was called, you guessed it 338/50BMG. IIRC didn't get very far because again IIRC it suffered severe throat erosion after only a few shots. Talk about being "over bored".
I'm excited about this new regulation. I have already started loading up some rounds for November.[/IMG]

It's legit...too bad that reporter was TERRIBLE and left out a pesky insignificant detail like "Additional cartridges that are legal under HEA 1231 include, but are not limited to, the following" as written a couple times on the DNR's website before posting such a list.
DNR gets clarification on new rifle law for deer hunting - 4/5/2016 - State of Indiana
So, they've been hanging out at a gun store, have they? Are they also reporting that the lifetime LTCH is going away?
I am highly dubious about this report. We'll see.

.300 Blackout will be a fine addition to the already legal AR-15 calibers. And now the AR-10 and the M1A in .308 will be good to go for us. Ak-47 and SKS allowed too. It is a good day for MSR's. Pretty soon the rules will be .243 and up so we can use all the other rifle calibers that got skipped this year. I can't wait for .270, 7mm-08, and .280 to be legal.
I set this in my favorites (To Copy later)..
Glad to see my 6MM Remington is on the GOOD To GO list.
The 6MM will take any Indiana Deer from a greater distance than most calibers...Bill.
