We are running out of "the good ones". Country music is losing to the pretty boys in skinny jeans that claim to be country now days. RIP Merle!

    This.

Merle would definitely be on the Mt. Rushmore of country music greats along with Johnny Cash, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Buck Owens -- the list goes on.

Is that a song title or lyrical line of his?

i was born in 77, never really cared about music until college, and not country until last few years

Yeah, probably one of his most played songs.

I wasn't around when he was popular either, but one of the best memories of my childhood is riding in the car with dad on the way to hunt squirrels, listening to Saturday Morning Memories on WMDH.

Doc, the guy has a ton of albums, hard to even tell you where to start listening. I love all of his stuff, but the middle part of his career has always been my favorite, download or go out and buy "The essential Merle Haggard, the Epic years" for an amazing, but tip of the iceberg, introduction.

I never really paid much attention to the music, but will remember him as a man who understood what this country is supposed to be, as evidenced by this quote:

In 1960, when I came out of prison as an ex-convict, I had more freedom under parolee supervision than there's available... in America right now.
