. The gun would run just fine without the pin, and as long as you didn't mount it t0o far off the gas tube would still enter the upper.
A slightly canted gas tube can be a major headache tho.

Some of you guys have lower standards. That is OK. The barrel pin only locates it until torque is applied via the barrel nut. I will always prefer a solid steel pin for that function. If you are OK with something else, it sure does not harm me in any way.
