this may be a dumb question, but here goes....

    i picked a rossi youth combo (.22LR and 20ga).

my question is on the 20ga shot barrel (modified). it is clearly stamped for 20ga 3" shells. can we run 2-3/4" shells in this?

the paperwork that came with the gun is very clear that you cannot shoot shorter .22 cartridges in the .22LR barrel, but makes no mention of the 2-3/4 vs 3" issue.

    thanks.

Yes 2 3/4" is fine, in many shotgun barrels the maximum length is listed with the ability to shoot shorter shells being assumed! Some stamp 2 or all 3 lenghts (2 3/4"or 3"or 3 1/2") I wish they would mark all from minimum to maximum! Good question though, never guess when it comes to a firearm!

    thanks for the replies

i was about 99% sure that 2-3/4 would be fine

i have always shot shorter shells in my old savage .410 marked for 3"

all my other shotguns that are marked for 3" are also marked for 2-3/4"

anyway, the rossi is for my son so i obviously wanted double check on it

oh yeah, shorter is fine. they tell the longest that works because when the shotgun shell opens it needs at least so much room to open without issues.

if you had a 2 3/4 and tried a 3 inch it may shoot, but the casing would block the barrel and may either work fine once or twice or block the barrel enough for something seriously wrong happen

You'll definately want to install a recoil pad. I let my oldest shoot the 20 when he was 9, and he still won't touch the thing. I have to admit, I tried it, and after several shots, even my shoulder was sore.
