Congrats on the Ruger American! As far as a scope in that price range, you might want to look at Redfield. That's the brand Ruger chose to put on their American series.

I just looked at Gander Mountain on-line and they have 3x9x42 for $159.
Im looking to make a deer gun out of it. If not a deer gun I got yote shooter anyway LOL.
Is a 3x9x40 alittle low for range with this gun?

Yeah, you can get a Vortex Crossfire II in that price range. I have a 1/2 dozen of those scopes and for the money they are great. And have a REAL lifetime warranty. Contact Alan at A&A Optics and he will fix you up as cheaply as any of the online retailers, plus he is a site sponsor.

Does the $180 include rings, or will those be on additional?

Generally, I have had good luck with Vortex and either a 3-9x or 3.5-10x would seem to fit your needs, although, if you are not going past 250yds, a 2-7x would allow for quicker handling.

I have not tried the Redfields, so I will not comment on them. Between my Nikon and the Vortex, I tend to give Nikon a very slight edge on glass and Vortex a noteworthy edge on adjustments and reticle design (for BDCs.)

A 3-9x40 is a good compromise, but I often look for a low magnifcation no more than 2.5x for speed and vision on close targets. Add to that the potential to use Warne low rings and I would think hard about a Diamondback 2-7x (just for the added durability over a CFii.)

For a cheap scope I don't think you can beat Weaver scopes. I picked up a 4-16x44 with side focus, it has worked out well. It repeats and holds 0 plus it is very clear. E. Arthur Brown has them for $147. I know that Midway has them at times for $125 when they are on sale. I really like mine. I have it on a Encore 243. I also have a Weaver Tactical Scope. I think I paid around $600 for it and they are now going for $800. It is a great scope. It has the first focal plain, it is a 4-20X50 with side focus.

I was a big fan of Burris but now I am buying Weaver because of price. I have had to send back a Burris for service so far I have not had to send back a Weaver.

Good luck with ever you get.

I went to the Terre Haute Rural King where I bought my 308 yesterday. I got the Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40 BDC.
It was in the display case for $79.99, it didnt have a box so the store clerk discounted it down to $53 and some change,
    I couldn't believe a $159 scope for $53 buck's!
Just thought I'd share this, the Put-together is moving along! Goin to see what kind of rings I can find today.
