the BBC is behind the times...the actual AK47 in 7.62x39 has not been standard issue for quite some time...the AK74 in 5.45x39 has been...and the Kremlin has been exlporing other calibers and platforms...the AK will continue to be made for a very long time though, too many other countries use it and many of the more elite Russian units specifically request rifles that fire the more devastating 7.62x39 round.

Would that get them down to 250 or even better mosin price?

    probably not.

    Problems:

    1) they are machine guns, only way to import would be as parts kits, ie cut up.
    2) the barrels have to be cut up to.
    3) in order to be imported they will have to sit somewhere for 5 years so they aren't "russian".
    4) people go nuts-o-crazy for rusky AK parts kits, unless they really do flood the market, the prices will be Saiga territory.

very true...the days of almost complete Romy $99 parts kits are long gone...the fascination over old russian ak parts is the same for old M14 parts...it makes sense when you can't find a new manufacturer of quality parts...but now companies are starting to pop up that are making good quality AK parts so it just makes sense to have a newer domestic rifle as opposed to an older foreign parts kitted together one.

Well the Mexican cartels hopefully will starting buying these instead of semi autos from the ATF. We don't want them driving up prices in the US market.

I loved this part of it.

News of the army's decision is reportedly being kept from the rifle's designer, Mikhail Kalashnikov, now 91.

"We do not want to take it upon ourselves to tell him," an unnamed member of his family told Russia's Izvestia newspaper.

    "It might kill him."

i agree, this is a very old story. Russian squads are made up of both 47s and 74s, rpk and or pkm's.....depending on what they need.

A story I read said they have 10 times more AK-74s than they currently need. This may mean big trouble for Izhmash; they have been having financial troubles since 2009. Perhaps they'll increase their civilian output as a result.
