Finished it up a couple days ago. I may go ahead and do the gas tube / standard AK handguards but I'm not in any hurry. I think the handguard is comfy, albeit a bit goofy looking.

I used a drill press, but I would have felt comfortable with a hand drill if I had a bench vice. I would say you need one or the other...Just my :twocents:

If I could give one piece of advice, I would say don't listen to people about the bullet guide tap. I read 3 turns in, half turn out. Don't listen to that BS. Do 1/2 turn in, 1/4 turn out with a small squirt of WD-40 or equivalent. It's not a race. My tap looks brand new. I can't believe all the stories of people breaking off their taps. If you turn it in 3 taps, the chip will fill in the threads you just cut and you're screwed. I felt the tap start to grab at 3/4 turns, so I cut it back to 1/2 in 1/4 out. Worked like magic!

I've got some Yugo 7.62 on backorder.

Good job. Keep the hand guard, it looks good, and is more practical.

Reminds me of a Vepr. Had one, and liked that style of hand guard, over the stock set up.

It was a mixture of Carolinashooterssupply.com for all the small parts and One Source Tactical for the sling, stock, and mags (3 new bulgarian steel surplus)

One source is generally a little pricey, but they had the wire folding stock and magazines in stock for the best price I could find, plus they had the sling I wanted. I support Suarez so I wasn't upset by spending a tad more. I was all set to buy the folder from Classic Arms Inc. but they were out of stock despite them being listed on their main page.

Good advice on the tap. Slow and steady wins the race there no matter what you are doing. Unless you are a high volume production shop that needs to turn out a bunch of parts, just go slow.

Once you've screwed up the threads or broken your tap you are pretty much finished.
