Soon I’m going to be tasked with pulling an overnight watch shift at a building my company recently purchased. We’ve been slowly putting equipment and resources in this building, and so far we’ve watched it via remote video camera. We’ve had several break ins, all of them arrested in quick order after remote video noticed the intrusion. I’m volunteering working the first 24/7 shift on site, and I plan on being prepared. If you were in my shoes, what would be your preferred carry setup?

    Area Description:

    • Large abandoned area with 10+ entrances (370,000 square feet)
    • Located in a ‘bad area’ within city limits
    • Average police response to break in calls is 3 minutes
    • One person on site (me), one person off site watching remote video feed

    Objective:

    • Ensure person who is on site (me) safety as much as the situation allows
    • Secure company property against vandalism and theft
    • Report break in to local police, letting them take primary action against intruders

    All input is greatly appreciated.

    Reliable handgun.
    Reliable handheld light (or three).
    Reliable cell phone.

-If it is within IMPD's jurisdiction, call dispatch (327-3811 I believe) and ask them to put a hazard on the run stating that you will be there and a physical description of yourself so that responding officers are aware of your presence before they arrive.

-Unless you feel that your life is in danger, do not have a weapon in your hands if officers are called to the business. There are over 1800 cops on the department, some are more level headed that others and you don't get to pick which ones will show up.

I've been there twice to catch burglars. It is nice that the video can see the burglars while we are responding...that is quite rare. I moved to days from lates so I don't go there anymore. I still remember this building back when it was full of life. Glad you guys have it now.

    Mall ninja attire and equipment.
    Treestand and thermal vision...

Oh wait how bout 2 cellphones fully charged. Binoculars, flashlight with back up. Water and gorp. Personal defensive weapon allowed? Whatever is allowed and whatever you need to be safe.
Comfy shoes with weather appropriate clothing. Voice recorder to record yourself in case something does go bump in the night you can keep a running commentary as well.
Sure there is more but if you intend to blend in and call police just use lights if needed otherwise be a ghost. Or light the place up like a casino on the strip and be seen doing random checks. Never ever go straight line anywhere. Keep doubling back on your route so no one gets behind you. And always plan your "out" in the event something pops up on you.
On our old docks the hookers would come distract you while the crackheads would break in the backdoor. One old koot actually bought a date while her pals took the pc's and phones. They were old ibm's running Windows Stoneage, but hey...lol
Prolly got $5 for each of them back in 1994.

    Have fun stay safe!
