I have an old Starrett that was my grandfathers. It's nice. I'm afraid to buy another vise as I'm sure I won't be happy with the quality in comparison.

I emailed the seller earlier today about that vise. Still haven't heard anything.

I have had a HF vice for 25 years, and it has always worked fine. I have used it for about everything you could use a vice for.

I don't have the requisite knowledge to do many car repairs, let alone rip apart a transmission. I've changed alternators and water pumps, but that's the extent of my mechanical repair experience.

And just for clarity, you are looking for a bench vise, not a vice.

Good point. When I saw the thread title, I was wondering whether he had drinking, smoking dope, or diddling the neighbor's wife on the bench in mind.

I think consent is the operative question; the Supreme Court has otherwise said it's A-OK!
