If by affordable people mean less than $50, Aberlour 12 meets that criteria (barely, $48) and I think it quite good.

Also am a fan of Talisker ($60ish for 10, price climbs VERY steeply for older) among the 'peatier' tasting scotchs

    Stick to single malts

Thats a whole lot of dirty wool sock drinking!

Stop it, you're making me thirsty!

You may not like dirty wool socks, but to me... yeah... I'm quite fond of beer that smells like goats and horse blankets paired with a filthy, runny triple cream cheese.

For inexpensive scotch, I don’t think you can beat Tomatin (~$30), for pretty good scotch, I like glenlivet 12yr (~$60), and for the unusual Smokey scotch LaPhroaig 10

I was impressed until you said that; which makes me wonder if I might have a problem. :(

I realize this is an old thread, but for anyone still wondering, the chart below, while not all inclusive, should help you get started. You may want to start from the bottom left and work your way to the right and up. The Islays at the very top are probably an acquired taste for most people.

Tomatin is surprisingly good for that price. I suspect they sell to blenders. I don't know how else they'd stay in business producing that quality at such a low price.
