Relatively new to guns, but everyone around me has more experience.
I am the defacto leader, however. So I need to get up to speed and
make it all work! Hence, I joined INGO.

About me: I once owned a Hi Point 9mm, did not like it and sold it.
I am now concerned about SHTF or a more likely scenario of general
lawlessness and needing protection. Got some food stores, some Silver
saved up, and working on my own Solar Power, Wind, etc. but have a
good pair oh generators, diesel and gas. Need protection!

Dad: 75 yo, eyesight marginal at best. But he was a rifle expert in the cold
    war days, and he has:
    30-30 Bolt action with Scope
    20 ga. Single Shot
    22 revolver
    S&W .357 revolver 6" barrel

    Sonny Boy (over 21 yo)
    AR 15 w/5.56 mm setup.
Top Shooter in Boot Camp platoon, about 3 points short of top shot
For his whole boot camp class. Qualified for sniper school, but did
    his MOS (air wing) anyway.

Wifey: She went into Basic for weekend warrior, she was well on her
way to Expert Rifle, (assigned to help others with shooting) but she
sustained stress fractures in both feet (arches) so she did not make it.
    Owns no guns.

    KID-Girl (almost late 20's)
Likes first person shooter games, and want to learn to shoot!
I'll need some input on what way to steer her, on a handgun.
She will likely shoot a 22LR long gun.

    Want List:
Hi capacity shotgun, semi auto, prefer 20 rounds capable.
5.56 or AK assault for "reach out and touch someone" capable.
(AK for cheap ammo, but may default to 5.56 since son has that)
CCW weapon, 13-15 shot preferable. Leaning to 40 cal.
"Under Bed" weapon. Can do double duty with above. Or I saw a sweet
Deal on a Taurus JUDGE copy for $359. Shoots .410 or .45 long Colt.
Decent for low capacity CCW for the short term. (IMO)

OK, now tell me about my misconceptions or if I just need to wake up
and smell the coffee. I'm here to learn and get some good practical
advice. Money is an object here, but I'm not against getting QUALITY
but in Ammo, I am seeking QUANTITY with reliability.

Could be a stretch of long, lean and mean years ahead...

Sig m400 AR is on the Black Friday deal list at Walmart. That would be a great AR to start with. As far as EDC goes, I went Glock. I started with a 4.5" XDm in 40. I found it to be just too damn bulky. I switched to a Glock 27 with a hybrid holster, and a couple of extra mags. I've not looked back. In a SHTF situation, it would also be beneficial to have a .22LR platform around. The ammo is super cheap, and you can carry a good couple thousand rounds in a backpack easily.

A 20 round shotgun? No such thing. There may be some 20 round drums for the Saiga 12, maybe??? Most high capacity shotguns hold 8 rounds. Look at the Rem 870 Police or a Mossberg 500 or 590. These make great shotguns and great under-the-bed guns so one gun will do both.

If you want a rifle to reach out and touch someone, then go with an AR15, it has far better inherent accuracy than the AK.

Skip 'The Judge' completely, the 410 is a horrid self defense round. The 45LC is better, but there are better guns to deliver a 45LC than the Judge.

    Yes, I like a 22LR, I was thinking about a Ruger 10-22 or get a second barrel
on the 5.56 setup. The Ruger will likely be same price as the second barrel/receiver if I'm lucky.

    Thx indybuell for the info!

You don't need a second barrel for the 22lr to be used in an AR15. You only need a chamber conversion kit. The kits include a replacement bolt/chamber assembly and you simply pop out the 5.56 bolt carrier group, insert the conversion 22lr kit's bolt carrier/chamber group and the rifle is ready to fire 22lr. Most conversion kits have now standardized on the Black Dog brand of magazines. To switch back to 5.56 ammo you simply reverse the procedure. Takes about a total of 1 minute to switch back and forth.

The conversion kits cost about as much a Ruger 10/22.

    Hi BirdMan002! :D

Thanks melensdad, I can save my $ instead of getting that Judge copy.
Also, the AK ammo is cheap, but range is a consideration here, so I guess I will
just stick with the 5.56 platform and buy bulk for Sonny Boy and myself. I see
fun times ahead, learning to shoot with him. He is so competitive, (like me, lol!)
so that will be some fun trying to top him. Like I could ever do that! lol

Oh, the Saiga has the 20 shot mag, and an AA12 does too, and a fellow at work
(real gun fan) said certain US made guns have an aftermarket snail drum conversion,
like maybe a Remington or Winchester? Prolly big bucks. I'm leaning to the Saiga.
IDK if the AA12 is legal for common folk. USMC uses it, I have read. Full Auto :D

    PS @ melensdad:

    The Kel-Tec 12 ga. BullPup carries 15, 7+7+1.
Seems hard to obtain... and I read 1 terrible review
about the tube selector/slide, plastic, and it warped badly.
Kel-Tec is too busy to fix it, according to the poster.

For what it is worth, I don't beleive the AA12 has been released in a civilian legal model. If it has I'd sure like to know about it.

There are some 20 round drums for the Saiga12, not sure about a Winchester or Remington drum available???

on the .22 LR around. Great for hunting, can still stop a human. Ammo is VERY cheap and plentiful (I currently have around 4,000 rounds).

Welcome to ingo! I'm closer to the 75yo in my views. Go with a 30-30, 30-06 or .308 for reach out, 12g pump (870, 500 or 590 mariner), .22 rifle for game (10/22, marlin 60, etc), .40 auto loader, and .357revolver. Once this is achieved you can start to multi task ammo by getting a .357 rifle, .40 carbine, .22 pistol. There used to be a conversion kit for 12g pumps that made them accept a drum mag with 10rnds capacity but they don't make them any longer and finding one for sale is tough and very expensive. I think it was called a "sidewinder".

What does the 22LR run in bulk? I have seen
8 to 10 cents per round in a box of 100, but
    I would buy 1000 at a time, once I found a good
hot all around bullet. Also, a 1000 cheap ones for
practice is not a bad idea LOL
Saw a video of a round called Aguila shot into ballistics
gel, very impressive for a 22 long!

    1. Welcome to INGO.

    2. Remember with guns, the subjective is objective. What one person likes, another cannot stand.

    3. Price is still an excellent indicator of quality.

    4. Guns are like handtools or golf clubs. Different guns for different jobs, assignments.

    5. Find what you like and buy multiple copies of the same gun.

    6. Buy a rail car full of magazines.

    7. It is all about triggers and sights, everything else is a distant concern.

    8. Slings on long guns, holsters for pistols.

    9. Never have enough ammo.

    10. Before I bought a gun I would go to class. Allow your software to select your hardware. Those with hours will choose different guns than those without hours.

Have you read Mel Tappan's Survival Guns? Think it might be a good starting point for you and your interest.

On the 22LR, I'd go ruger takedown. But thats just me.

Very Nice! :yesway: Is that available in a folding stock or BullPup?

Hello HOTPOCKET! Nice to meet ya!

Hello to Shadow, Sartwell, Hodgdon, Chocktaw2! So friendly here!

THANKS for the Write up, Kirk Freeman! Great Advice. All of it!

@ ALL: I am usually a "mid-range buyer" meaning that I buy for good, basic quality. Most quality products have a nice mid range that has max value, without lots of useless and expensive to replace options that simply inflate the bottom line. The great thing about guns is that you can add many modular items that can add to utility, even on mid priced weapons (it would appear). I guess I can get some ideas thru research now, and then start a post in the appropriate area. NICE TO MEET EVERYONE!
