I was looking at HK's website and decided to check out the military stuff for fun. I noticed that the G36 is offered with any of four options for the fire-select, and that one of them makes it semiauto-only (it has only "Safe" and "Single" modes). Assuming the 18" barrel, would this then be available to civilians here in Indiana, despite being in the law enforcement/military section of the website?

If so, is the G36 tough enough to handle steel-cased 5.56/.223 ammo (the only kind I can afford and the reason I probably can't get an AR)? And/or, how much better would it actually shoot than an AK?

Bottom line: I'd really like a modern, semi-auto "assault rifle" that outperforms my AK and can still put up with cheaper ammo. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'll take them.

    No.

The closest you can get would be to start with an SL8-1, and modify it extensively until it resembles the G36. There are parts/kits to allow this, but the end product will NOT be inexpensive.
