Just picked up a Ruger American 450 Bushmaster. My cousin lives in Arkansas, and I’ll have a few opportunities to hunt some hogs down there. I also thought it would be a good public land gun, but I have talked to a few hunters who also use it for private land hunts because they say they get nice bang-flops.

What’s your experience with the 450 Bushy?

Basically, the 458 socom and the 450 bushmaster were answers to a 45/70 brush gun in a modern rifle. Both are great whitetail guns, with an edge to the 458 socom for bullet selection and versatility in loads. The 450 will serve you well.

    I have 2 , both on AR's . One is a 16" the other is 18" . Accuracy is roughly the same for both of them , 1" - 1.5" at 100 yards .

They are LOUD with muzzle breaks installed , I removed mine and really didnt feel any difference in recoil , but noticeable change in muzzle volume .

It has been my sons and myself go to setup for several years and we hunt private ground . I prefer this caliber for any shot under 175 yards , which is about our max . If you hit something with the 450 , it usually only takes a few steps and falls over .

I had a 20" upper on an AR. If I remember correctly, the Remington loading shot a little better than the Hornady. I shot 2 hogs with it down in Texas. Both fell over dead right there.

I had one in a AR platform very accurate. I could shoot 3 shot group at 200 yards that I could cover with a quarter. Very nice gun, took a buck with it and he didn’t go far after the shot.

I've taken five deer with a Ruger No 1 in 450 bushmaster. One was facing me at 150(ish) yards. The bullet passed through from base of it's neck to the hind leg coming to a stop just under the hide. It's maybe a bit much for white tails but for a public hunter in the hills and hollers of southern IN it's great.

Wear earplugs and make sure folks standing around you are prepared for the muzzle blast. It will blow things off the shooting bench when you squeeze the bang switch if you install a muzzle brake.

Shoot three deer with mine so far. Farthest one went is no more than 20thYards and that’s only because I pulled a little when I shot.

Picked the same (I think) rifle up earlier this year. For me I was able to get 1 MOA with the rifle in sighting in. I took a nice buck with it this year. Shot was about 160 yards. Didn't die right there, but only went about 20 yards. I saw the deer the entire time.

Watch out for windage and elevation changes, especially at more than 100 yards. Get a good sight in range that you'll be able to make a dope chart, and get a good BDC scope. On this hunt the wind hold was just outside of the deer. Elevation was also a factor for which I had to adjust. As long as you do your part and keep shots to within 300 yards you'll be fine for pretty much any game common to North America.

I've also found it to be an exceptional supressor cartridge. I have the Silencerco Hybrid. Perfect for this application.

Ive owned 5 450s, I've killed many deer and hogs with that rd. I've only had one deer go 20 yards. Everything else dropped. It prefer using 250gr winchester deer season xp, and 300 gr federal
