Since it's a pistol, the biggest caliber you could legally use would be the biggest caliber you could find. Also since it's a pistol, I'm not sure you could use a 12ga because that would(probably) be an AOW, which might not be hunting legal.

Could I use a 243? I see the Contender doesnt offer a 243 barrel but the Pro Hunter offers one in a pistol barrel.

There is no limit to pistol calibers when shot from a pistol. A .243 sounds like a fine choice. I don't know enough specifics to say how far out it's effective on deer, but i guess it depends some on how accurate you are with you handgun.

If you are looking to buy, get an Encore. Then you can shoot the .500 S&W through it, or the .30-06 :rockwoot:

Has anyone here hunted deer in Indiana with a Desert eagle .50AE?...its legal, and you can get a 10" barrel for it too!:ar15:.

That is what I have been trying to tell everyone that a 45-70 is legal in a pistol and not a rifle, but some of these no it all people think they are right. I have two buddies that are police officers and one that is a conservation officer. They clearly state that there is no maximum case limit on a handgun cartridge. As long as the bullet is 243 and larger and the case is at least 1.16 inches long it is legal. The guns listed in the indiana hunting and trapping guide are examples of legal handgun cartridges, not the only ones legal.
