Congrats, OP. Hopefully you won't soon be making threads like "my wife doesn't want me to buy yet another gun, how do I hide them from her?"

Oh, I'm afraid that has already happened. I bought a gun safe the night before last because I knew she couldn't get mad at me after I proposed. :D It was funny because in the middle of her being all excited explaining to my roommate and his girlfriend when we got back, she stopped and said, "What the heck is that thing?" I told her she can't be mad because her ring cost about 100 times more.

Congrats!! Glad you are both safe. An incident close to home a few months back made me decide to get my carry permit to feel safe, maybe someday she will get hers as well. I became an instant shooting addict once I went to the range with my hubby and I'm the one that wants more guns and the girl running on black Friday in menards to get my safe before they sold out... Lol.

    Scary.
    Congrats.
Downtown used to be fun, not so much anymore. Hopefully the police AND business Owner's (they have a responsibility as well) get a handle on things real quick.

Yeah, businesses have a hand in this, and Simon said within the past day or two that they don't see a need for any sort of curfew, and that their security is able to handle anything. Circle Center Mall has been a serious problem for at least 3 years. I worked downtown until about a year ago, and got to see the ambulances and police cars with lights on sitting outside the mall entrances, and seeing the large groups of thugs hassling everyone on the sidewalks, often within feet of the police patrols.

I won't go downtown now after dark. Although, the daytime isn't too much safer now. I guy who worked in my building (across from Circle Center) got mugged and knifed at 6am in the parking garage.

I wish the city council and the metro LE could get together on this, and implement some effective programs that would curb the gang 'activity' and violence

The City-County council is too busy figuring out new and exciting ways to give tax dollars to the CIB. They're useless.

I was just thinking about that today. The kid couldn't be much older than 16 or 17, and I was wondering how soon he'll be back out on the streets diminishing our society. If they don't nip this in the bud, his generation will surely trash our city.

He was probably "home" before you were.

Congrats on the engagement. We were in downtown Saturday afternoon to eat at St. Elmo's as part of the Devour Downtown event at 3PM. After that we headed into Circle Center mall to look around. One thing I remember my wife mentioning was how many mall rats / thugs that there were walking around. Now I'm not surprised that Circle Center Mall is starting to get trashy on the inside...a lot of the stores are run down and there are even quite a few empty spaces...just not the place it used to be. Not only that, but downtown was extremely crowded with attendees of Disney on Ice and Monster Jam.

I've pretty much ruled out downtown Indy as somewhere I will visit in the evening...it's just not safe anymore.

Congratulations on the engagement. I proposed to my wife on the same bridge. We have been married for 10 years. The night I was going to propose there I had everything planned out and then it started pouring down rain. I decided to park in the water company parking lot and go on with it. Luckily I had an umbrella. She wondered why in the hell I was dragging her out in the rain. She said yes and no shots were fired... Wishing you a happy life together...

These are just a bunch of innocent and happy go-lucky kids, who were out collecting for different charitable organizations , when all of a sudden that evil gun jumped into the hand and started shooting!!! Don't believe me???? Ask The Concerned Clergy of Indianapolis!!

She's been to the range twice with me now and she loves shooting, so hopefully she'll open up to it even more! She's not against me carrying by any means, she just always comments how she thinks it's not needed to carry everywhere you go, often calling me silly (in a joking manner). As she was shaken up inside the StarBucks and started telling me that as we ran she felt safe because I had a gun, I simply told her that you just never know when something like this will happen. Since she already likes shooting at the range, I see a LTCH in her near future :D

I think it's safe to say that a good number of those thugs you saw were packing heat. That's the scary part, if something were to happen were you needed to defend yourself with a firearm, you might be up against a whole army of thugs.

Great minds think alike a guess! :): We parked in the museum parking garage. When we get back, she said she knew something was up when I asked her to go out to the bridge before we went into the garage. After all, it was about 20 degrees out. Wishing you a happy life together as well!

A memorable proposal to say the least. Congratulations!!! Matching pistols would be the obvious wedding gift to each other!

I totally would be down for that... now, how do I convince her

    Congrats on the proposal!

These "events" are exactly why my wife and I do not go anywhere near the Mall and Canal Path downtown any longer, especially on weekend evenings. Indy has a real problem. It isn't really with the "kids", or with guns, but with a bunch of parents who are refusing to be a parent to their children. All of this BS about curfews and "safe" places for children to hang out isn't even making a feeble attempt at the root of the problem: parents letting their children run wild on the streets.

Congrats again, and I hope your wedding is LESS eventful, but your honeymoon is MORE!

Ya the world is a scary place and you can't be with her all the time. I took 2 classes and trained a bunch before I was comfortable carrying but now I do all day everyday and everywhere legal which is most everywhere in Indiana. I did some idpa tournaments to help me adjust and practice what it would be like in everyday situations if I had to defend my life or my kids, so that's a suggestion too. I am sure after the situation and the fact that you have your ltch that she's not far behind. Good luck and happy wedding planning :-)

That would be awesome to have matching guns :-) if my husband let me pick them out I would be all for it, and you could get the sane type of gun and let Her get hers cerokated with the slide or grips a different color.... Then she may be all for it :-)

I was at Circle Center at almost the exact time this all went down. I'm guessing the huge amount of people you saw (thuggish types) on the street were the result of a MASS exodus from the mall. There was a small girl fight that took place and MANY people were all escorted out of the mall just then. If I had to guess I'd say you saw the same group or two that we did. It was fairly gross to see all that hair (one of them had dreds for sure) on the floor.

Well first to the OP. Glad y'all are ok. And congrats on the engagement. You have memorable story to go along with it albeit a terrorfying one but something you will always remember.

The City-County council is too busy figuring out new and exciting ways to give tax dollars to the CIB. They're useless.
This here is a big part of the problem. They want to spend money and bend over backwards to satisfy the needs businesses to stay or come to Indy. And not focus on the problems themselves. They even go as far as give the West 38th Corridor a special zone for developement to help boost the area. But not once addressing (at least publicly) the underlying issue why the majority of the businesses fled the area to begin with.

The problem is larger than the council and IMPD. Market Square Arena should have been turned into a jail and the money spent on Lucas Oil should have gone to build a prison. The thugs get locked up regularly, and they get right back out again.

Yes this is 100% true. The excuse always given to someone being back on the streets is "prisoner over crowding". The reason being we only have so much room and we keep the most violent offenders.
These thugs know this. Plus most are under the age of 18. But where are the parents at with these kids/thugs downtown? Why not hold the parents accountable for a juvenile deliquant? The thugs know it's just basically a slap on the wrist. This is why most of the break ins at gun shops and the major gang crime is committed by youth.
It's not the LE that are at fault. It's the system as a whole. What's a LE to do when the judge puts the guy they just arrested right back out on the street?
Criminals for the most part know the system is broken. There is little to no consequences for there illegal actions.
It's not just Indy. Where I live now is the same way. Some people are arrested and released twice in the same day, some three times in a week. But they are put right back out because they are "petty" crimes (minor theft, small possession, domestic) and more of a nuisance to the courts than anything else. But when does the system say enough is enough and keep the habitual petty criminal?

I work part time at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Of course I am not allowed to carry into the building which means I am unarmed when I leave later that night. And because of the job I have, many times I am leaving later than even the rest of the employees. Even though I try to be aware of my surroundings it still sucks to be alone while walking to my vehicle.
