I bought 3 single shot 12 gauges off a fellow INGO member and was wondering if anyone knew anything about them. One says New York Arms Co, one says Ruger Arms Co and one just says VOLUNTEER. Just courious if these were sold as cheapos or what. Thanks:dunno::patriot:

As far as "sold as Cheapo" is concerned, I talked to an old man that said they used to sell guns like this in store front windows years ago. They were nothing special, no model numbers, just a name on the side. They don't even say 12 ga anywhere. Here are some pics with serial numbers and names, and actually looking at the one pic I think the Rugers actually says Rougers.

Okay, well that didn't work. Well the pics are in my album if you want to check them out.

He was probably on here a few months ago, trying to figure out the same thing. Couldn't figure it out, so he figured he'd just sell them cheap. Now they're your problem.

Well, one comes ostensibly from New York, another one is probably less than 60 years old, and the third may be from Tennessee. Or maybe not. Does that help? Hint: the quality of the answers tends to follow the quality of the questions. Give us some details, you know, pictures, model numbers, serial numbers, that kind of stuff. The serial numbers haven't been scratched off, have they?

These were likely sold as "hardware store" brands. Happened a lot back in the day.

Mossberg was marketed under the name Westernfield, and sold by Montgomery Wards. Stevens/Savage also sold some under different names that escape me at the moment. Even Winchester sold some "Sears brand" firearms.

Not neccessarily "cheapo", but not top of the line either.

I actually own one of these SxS 12ga. hardware guns. It bears the name of the "Compeer Gun Company" and is stamped Indianapolis, In.

I have seen "Volunteer" brand shotguns. They could be identified by the shape of the receivers as having been made by Savage.

I had an of "Coast to Coast hardware pump gun that was a Savage model 30, and an S.S.Kreske (pre KMart) over and under that was a Stevens.
