So the past year i've been getting a bit into buying gold and silver coins, nothing crazy, the typical silver eagles, and a gold coin here and there, but what are your thoughts on the best coins to buy? Silver rounds are cheaper than silver eagles of course, silver eagles are the most popular i find, so i kinda diversify what i buy but stick to the mainstream for the most part.

One thing i find weird is the rare coin market goes up, and up, and even during the bad times, it seems they still perform really well. Why would this be? When you think of baseball cards, during recessions or bad economic times, rare things like that go down in value. It seems like a rare gold coin will still do well, all because of when it was minted and whats on it and how many were made. This seems weird since its still just gold! anyway its fun and any tips would be much appreciated.

Coins sold based on "rarity" are a big money sink. There's a premium over spot (melt value), but anything else, you're opening yourself up to scams at worst, subjectivity at best. I have some silver and gold Maple Leafs, but mostly junk dimes. No premium for rarity, just melt value. They're kind of old, but there's no wanking around with dates and mints, just metal. When you get past that, you're into something being worth what you can get for it.

I'd be cautious with collectable/rare coins. You really need to be educated about that market because it is easy to get ripped off. You can get more PMs if you buy rounds/bars, instead of Maple Leafs and Eagles. However, I've found that those coins are also the easiest to sell and you will likely make your premium back at sale time.
