Does anyone have an idea what SKS magazines should cost? For a 30rd and 40rd. How many should be kept on hand for SHTF? Should I go with more stripper clips than mags? Advantages and disadvantages? Thanks to all who respond!

IME, most of the higher-capacity commercial SKS mags don't work worth a crap, especially the detachable ones. I certainly wouldn't trust them for SHTF; the durability and reliability just aren't there. That said, I don't have any experience with the newer Tapco "Intrafuse" mags.

IMO, the best higher-capacity option is the semi-permanent star-marked (Chinese?) 20rd mag. Track one down, install it, and focus your stockpiling efforts on ammo and stripper clips.

If you want to stockpile mags, get a rifle that was designed to use detachable ones from the beginning.

Cool. Thanks for the info Shooter. Do you have any ideas on what to look for? I'd love to have an AR-15, but they cost so much. Thoughts?

If you want to support your SKS, follow my advice above re: the 20rd fixed mag and stocking up on ammo and stripper clips.

If you want a rifle that takes detachable mags and uses the same ammo as your SKS, look at AKs or the Saiga sporters.

20rd Tapco mags feed nearly flawlessly, but nothing works better than the factory 10rd with stripper clips.

I have 9 SKS's and several mags. Tapco 20rd takes the cake.

Same here, just not as many SKS's. I've got 6 of the tapco mags, and they all run great. Not a prob out of one of them yet. But if I want to go back to fixed mag, I've also got a couple gallon ziploc bags full of stripper clips. :):
