A gut shot is a gut shot.
Just because you hear a couple of quick shots that doesn't mean they are just flipped out there.
You thump one in the boiler room and Bambi hits the afterburners, if you didn't spot the hit you could try for some insurance.
Movers are fun BTW. Checking in your deer with multiple holes in the chest might draw some criticism at the station............but it rode there in your truck, and all the hits were good.
    Screw the critics.
Have heard way too many stories from supposed purists that didn't want to waste meat. Hit a deer, it drops, they climb down and the deer is gone.
Or they go all he-man and try to do a coupe de grace with a knife........think some Einstein at Chain O Lakes tried that a couple of yrs ago, deer killed him.

With adrenaline going, you can make a few aimed shots...........thinking them spaced out...........and your buddy will be laughing, saying you shot like a full auto.

Those with slow minds and reflexes may never be able to do that.

Not everybody who uses a slug gun is genetically inferior.

    "Rifle precision"...............yeah whatever.
I had two 870's with rifled bores that shot under 2" at 100.
Took some tweaking and testing (maybe a bit more work than most slug gunners do).
My BIL ran a M500 trophy slugster. Did NOT buy ammo from same lot #. But he did test two types to see impacts........and lot variance was minimal (if any) at 50 yards.
So he just shot his deer at 50 yards and in.
Using the old BRI silver box stuff the bloodtrail on his first buck was scant (good hit). So he said screw it the next couple of years and just shot his deer in the head (not kidding).

Maybe rifles can offer more precision, but as long as whatever used is within its limits..........who cares?

My 870P smoothbore wasn't very good with Activ slugs. 75 yards was 3.5" or so.
Obviously it was a broadside target rig at that D.

Nuked my 120" little 8 pt at 25, pinpoint.

This yr I'll be running a Ruger #1 RSI. They aren't known to be sub MOA rigs. Honestly, I'd be happy if it shot under 2".
Which is NOT better than the two rifled 870's I built.

Hell, my Mossberg 500 smoothbores were solid shooters to 150 yards.

And yeah, I would test for cleaning interval, foulers, and buy slugs from one lot#.

I still might go for a walnut 1100 Magnum and get a slug bbl for it.............just for nostalgic hunting.
    Old shotguns work.

BTW, I run around with a fairly serious group of deer hunters.
Serious about their gear and the sport.
They put a lot of bone on the wall and meat in the freezer using slug guns.
They did not however, buy any old shotgun and slap a Tasco side mount on it and run slugs they bought on sale at K mart.

Sure, lots of folks ran such crappy or unchecked systems.

    Some still do.

That type will not turn into a deer sniper with the law change. They'll run funky ammo, cheap rings/scopes and probably flinch like crazy trying to sight in the day before the opener.
    If they sight in.

Bet a bunch will be content with boresighting.

Sportsmen do the work up front, run good/proven gear.

Unfortunately, not everybody who buys a deer license is a sportsman.

This is true. I managed to get my 44 mag down to MOA accuracy and was quite pleased with its performance. That being said, I will take my factory Savage 308 with 1/2moa accuracy, and more than double the BC over my 44 mag for hunting any day.

I really like my dad's old fingergroove Ruger .44 auto.
Front sight is big, so makes it a 75 yard rig IMHO.
    Trigger is horrible.
But the cool factor is HUGE.
In the woods, it worked quite well.
Sure I'd have thumped the deer a 2nd time, if it hadn't done a backflip and laid belly and 4 legs up...........dead.

    :)

Find the limits and stay within them. Don't need sub MOA to kill cleanly.

Nice to have, but isn't needed to be an ethical hunter.

My 700 ADL .243 will go under an inch.
My #1 RSI in .243 probably double that.

Woods I hunt, 100 yards is max.

That short little RSI is this yrs rig :)

I use rifles for the cool factor, not any added "precision" :)

It's not the precision I found lacking, but the range. As much as I love my .44 mag, it will be my .308 in the woods (or the fields) this year.

I do, however, have a lifetime supply of .44 Leverevolution ammo that will just be gathering dust now...

I grew up handloading for varmint rifles, shooting chucks (back when we had such critters).
On this forum and others, a lot of people still think 100 yards is far.
Gun or personal abilities? I dunno.
    Just think it funny.
For the places I hunt, 200 yards and in is about it for deer.
My bud's dad's place, one could go past 600. Seen some whoppers way out there.
    Usually see nothing.
Wind is wicked out on the flat open spaces.
    Rather hunt timber.

I would not count on it.. most of my buddies dont usually dump a gun and go. Yes I know some will but the way gun prices have been I would not count your guns before the hatch...

    .
Between not wanting to sell guns and hunting at short woods ranges, my wife and I will probably keep our slug guns. I will take some of my old 30 cal guns like the Winchesters out this season just so they can go hunting again like they did 100 years ago.:)
