I recentlty bought a Smith & Wesson 4566 in really clean condition. The problem is the slide doesnt lock back on an empty magazine. If anyone is knowledgable on third gen pistols I would greatly appreciate the info or suggestions about where to take it to be fixed.

I will outbid Lebowski by $1 as it would be in great company with my 4506, 5906, 3906, and 3913. But if you still have problems with the mag I will trade you mag for mag as I have 10 mags, so you can get it back up and running if you only have the one mag.

    First step: Mag followers.

Next step: Have someone else shoot it and see if it's not your grip infringing upon the slide catch/release lever.

Next step: slide catch/release lever spring.

I know smith had different color followers in their 45 mags. mine are yellow a friends 4506 has white followers. Is that relevant to the problem?

    It could be.
The mag that originally came with my 1006 had a yellow hard plastic follower, and the ones I bought the first few years after that also had yellow.
I bought some used ones about ten years ago, and they have white plastic of a softer material.

All my 3rd gen 45(boy do I ever miss them) mags had hard yellow followers and 50% of them did this very thing.

The slide release is a decent ways away from your average shooting hold...the mag followers wear against the stainless slide stop....this is the problem...98% sure.

    God bless

I've got a mix of orange, yellow, black, as well as a few 2nd gen metal followers that work fine on my 4506.

All of my replacement followers where black....never saw a metal follower in a smith.

I have seen the orange in 9 and 40, just not a 45 that I've owned....I heard the colors coordinated with the "dash" series of gun....like a 4516-1 was blue, but a 4516-2 was black, and a no dash was yellow?....?

    God bless

I had a very similar problem with the two mags which I got with my Idaho LEA trade-in 3rd gen. 4586. Ordered replacement mag springs and followers (black plastic, btw) and the issue(s) went away. Personally, if I could get metal replacement followers to try and they functioned reliably, I'd ditch the plastic in a NY minute. IMO whatever plastic these are made of just deforms and wears too quickly in normal use for my tastes.
