Smith & Wesson just applied some of that fat stack of cash that they have been sitting on thanks to the Obama boom. Smith buys Battenfeld Technologies (think of it as a holding company for lots of companies that you are familiar with--Frankford, Caldwell, Tipton, Wheeler, inter alia) of Columbia, Missouri.

As we all know, the real money (fat margins) is in the accessories, not the guns themselves. I think this is a smart move for Smith. What do you think?

IMO, S&W is trying to run with the Big Dogs (i.e. Freedom Group and ATK). Their purchase of Thompson-Center a few years back hasn't gone so well for them; hope they haven't bitten off more than they can chew with this latest acquisition.

Last I saw their sheet, Smith was sitting on cash reserves out the demon hole. Got to put that money to work! Buying a holding company with fat margins on their products make sense.

It makes a heck of lot more sense than buying T/C. What was that all about???

    T/C? Romanticism.

Same way that Ford had Jaguar at one time and VAG has Bentley and that Eyetalian super car company. Albeit, more successful than mere romanticism.

Accessories and consumables in many industries often offer opportunities for more profit (%) than the base product. I wonder what market share the Battenfeld companies have in their respective markets.

The products manufactured by Battenfeld are almost all high-margin low-cost accessories, the type of products low-margin gun manufacturer eye with envy.

Now, if those are also high demand products--cha-ching!

I just bought a couple vibra-prime units from Midway USA for $24 each. They normally sell for $60. I wonder if Frankford Arsenal was doing some liquidating before the sale.

They obviously wanted to ruin a perfectly good gun company with good customer service.

Please don't do anything to rock the boat S&W. I own at least one product from the companies listed, and I can't say I'm displeased with any of it. In fact, Wheeler sent me some replacement bits for a screwdriver for free recently, so I'm obviously a big fan of them. I hope S&W makes a bazillion dollars on this deal . . . now if they would only lose the Hillary Hole and quit using the sides of their 1911's like a notebook.

As was said I hope that the combined companies all do well and are not damaged in anyway for the sake of the almighty $$
