I just looked up gun ownership in America and found that there are 70 guns in the US for every 100 people. Far and away shotguns are the most popular followed by hand guns and then rifles and what are mistakenly called assault weapons. Assault weapons are select fire or automatic and only about 8 percent of the guns in America are that variety and you must have a very expensive permit and submit to full FBI background checks to legally own those.
So if there are 300 million people in the US today there are also 210 million guns.
So let’s talk about gun control. How does anyone propose to get rid of over 200,000,000 guns? Most gun owners would go to extreme lengths to prevent the loss of their guns and their 2nd amendment rights. Are you going to put Colt, Remington, Henry, and Winchester, Smith and Wesson and a myriad of other manufacturers out of business? Are you going to close the hundreds or thousands of gun stores in the US? Is the Army or police force going to go door to door confiscating weapons? \
No, after all we the people have more guns and more skill in their use than does the government and many police, soldiers etc. are active in the gun community as well.
We have experienced way too much violence in this country lately and a lot of it has been at the hands of gunmen. Perhaps it is time we looked at the people who do these awful crimes and not the tools they use. Instead of asking how did he get that gun let’s try just one time asking how is it that in the most civilized country in the world we raise young men who want to kill their family and small children. How does a young man get so sick that he plans entry into a theater for the sole reason of killing people he doesn’t even know?
Oh and one other point, these horrible incidents happen almost exclusively in gun free zones. Why not take some of our Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who are out there looking for work and employ them as armed security in our schools? Not only would the kids be safer but they would learn that not all men who carry guns are bad men. Even the school administration might eventually learn to see the person not the gun.
