i have used automotive clear on stocks before. works very well. only drawback i see is the cost and application would probably prohibit most people from trying it. a qt. of clearcoat costs about 30-40 dollars. hardner will run about 12-15 dollars. then you will need thinner for gun cleanup. another 15.00. you will need wax-grease remover to wipe down stock before applying clearcoat. another 15.00. automotive clear is not forgiving about any oils on surface. it will fish eye badly if not clean. brush on ureathene finishes are easier to apply and cheaper and more forgiving. you could probably have your stock ready to clear and take it to a body shop. after they get done spraying a car there is always clearcoat leftover they will dumpout. would be very easy for them to hang a stock up and useup the leftover clear.

I second using boiled linseed oil. several coats rubbed in and allowed to dry give a satin finish that resists moisture.

    Love the stuff
