STP in a Briggs-powered push mower?

I decided, perhaps wrongly, to add some STP to my lawn mower's Briggs & Stratton engine. (5 HP, older Quantum)

I added about half of a standard sized bottle of STP to the half-gallon or so of gas already in the tank.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how bad of a decision was that? For reference, when I start it, it runs like a P-51 Mustang fresh off the assembly line in 1945, to the point it freaks me out and I shut it down without mowing.

Change the gas.

If run too long it will melt stuff. No joke. It's likely methanol.

Dump gas, put 4 CAP FULLS in a fresh tank.

Yeah, it runs about five seconds and I think, "DAMN, IT IS GONNA BLOW!!!"

I guess the product messaging that says, "one bottle for up to 21 gallons" should have been a clue, huh?

I drained the tank this morning and now I am getting 5HP instead of 500HP.
