I almost bought a USAS 12 from a guy that had never registered it. I refused to send the funds until I saw the paperwork...as it turned out...the paperwork was a hand written receipt from the early 90's. Doh!

The Street Sweeper reclassification had nothing to do with .50 cal+. If it did then all 12 gauges would be DD's.

ryknoll is right on this one. Over .50 is DD unless found by the Secretary to be suitable for sporting purpose. Lloyd Bentsen declared them not suitable, thus the reclassification.

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]The USAS-12, Striker 12, and Streetsweeper shotguns were classified as destructive devices pursuant to section 5845(f) because they are shotguns with a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter which are not generally recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes. I am 99% sure this is a dumb question, but when something is reclassified do you need to pay $200 for the stamp, or since they decided to change their minds, is the $200 tax waived and all you need to do is register it within the given amount of time?

In the case of the Street Sweeper, owners were allowed to register them on a Form 1, tax free so long as they did so within the registration window. Once the window was past, all unregistered guns were contraband.
