Anyone know of any good ways to pull the old military oil finish from used milsurp rifles? Im not a fan of the "oven cleaner" technique ive read about. Ive done it in the past in different ways and was hoping anyone had some new ideas/techniques to make it easier.

    thanks

I've always had good luck with letting the stock sit in some Acetone. If the stock has checkering I always used a soft bristled tooth brush to scrub those areas. It doesn't take long to dry, since the Acetone evaporates quickly. After that I usually just give it a light sanding and reapply the tungoil or stain

I've always used the oven cleaner. I would think any type of paint stripper would work also, I use it on stocks that have been stained or varnished.

I found out quite by accident that non-chorinated brake cleaner strips the finish off wood pretty quickly. Dries fast like acetone too.

That purple degreaser sold at autoparts stores and Walmarts, will remove the old gunk fast. Spray on, let sit 15-20 minutes, rinse. Doesn't remove stampings either. Have done two M14 stocks with it now and they look very nice after a fresh coat of real tung oil.
