Ok to add a stupid question. If you own a large piece of land do you have to follow the hunting season times for shooting etc...? Like if I own a bunch of land can I hunt year round? And I see people posting how many doe/antlered I assume that means you have to follow some ref in that regard correct. Then another Q do all states have similiar requirements? Would buying a bunch of land in a neighboring state avoid some of these regulations? If you can't tell I've never hunted before.

Yeah I was serious. So what is the benefit to owning a large piece of land if you are not allowed to harvest off of it? I saw one person say how they would have bought some land but sent there kid to college instead. Why bother having the land if there is no benefits? And someone said something in regards to farmers and nuasences etc what was that in regards to? Like I said I've never hunted in my life so these questions I know sound super dumb but I'm clueless to how all this works. One other thing I know people say how they get fishing license. If I build a pond in my yard do I need a license to fish in it?

You get to hunt with out having to pay to the license, you get to have exclusive control of who gets to come one the land while you are hunting, & other times.. If you are going to hunt, being the land owner is the way to go..

I own land and still have to buy a license. It's got to be zoned as agricultural to be exempt.

Owning land also means you don't have to look at your neighbors and they can't see you.

Sorry I should have been clearer, I ment what is the benefit of owning land in regards to hunting. I realize the other aspects lol. What I'm understanding is it has to be designated agriculture and you do not need to get a license as well as no one else hunting near you. How much is the license? I know someone who got a lifetime one which I think he said are unavailable now but if your just talking in regards to hunting I'm sure his lifetime one was cheaper then property taxes on a large plot. Also someone made it seem like you might be able to get extra deer on private property is that correct? And is the difference substantial? I was thinking 100 acres or so for size. What is the minimum to hunt on? Sorry for all the noob questions.

I would recommend you read the regulations issued by the DNR. https://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/2343.htm

Hunting your own property does not give you the ability to take any more than legally allowed in the regs. The only difference is the ability to hunt as a landowner rather than buying a separate license. You are not allowed to take more than allowed by the regs. Others hunting on your property with your permission who do not live there and are not immediate family still need a license/tags.

So my .5 acre plot is ok to hunt on (lol) with its single row of concord grapes butted up to 26 acres of woods where deer come and go so long as I drop the deer on my .5acre.

The DNR site states that the land must be farmed. Here is the quote from their website & link:
https://www.in.gov/dnr/3247.htm
Do I need a license to hunt on my property?

If you meet the following exemptions, then you do not need a license to hunt your own property. Exemptions: Landowners or lessees of farmland who farm that land and are residents of Indiana are not required to obtain a permit while hunting, fishing, or trapping on the land they own or lease. A license is also NOT required for the landowner’s or lessee’s spouse or children living with them. This license exemption does not apply to land owned by a business, corporation or partnership unless the shareholders, partners, members or owners are comprised solely of the members of an immediate family who farm that land.

read the actual law, if you OWN it you can hunt, if you lease it you have to be farming it. the DNR needs to learn to use commas.

") Subject to subsection (d), an owner of farmland located in Indiana who is a resident or nonresident of Indiana and the spouse and children living with the owner may hunt, fish, and trap without a license on the land that the owner owns.

(3) A lessee of farmland who farms that land and is a resident of Indiana and the spouse and children living with the lessee may hunt, fish, and trap without a license on the leased land.  This subdivision does not apply to land that is:"
