    LOWELL HIGH SCHOOL FENCING CAMP:
    July 28, 29, 30 & 31
    8am to NOON
    Lowell High School Field House

If you know any middle school aged or high school aged students (6th grade and above) please let them know about this camp, to sign up they can send an email to Coach McPheeters (see below for contact info). Camp includes learning basics, participation in bouts, camp T-Shirt, plus a Beginners Tournament at the end of camp.

The goals of this camp are to introduce middle & high school aged students to the world of Sport Fencing. To provide a safe training atmosphere for students to learn with other students of similar ages. To allow students to learn the basics of sport fencing in non-intimidating surroundings.

This camp will be coached by Coaches:
    • Kendra McPheeters (Foil Coach at L.H.S. + Foil Coach at NWI Fencing Club)
    • Bob Skurka (Saber Coach at L.H.S. + Armorer at Marian Catholic H.S. & NWI Fencing Club)
    • L.H.S. Varsity Fencers will be assisting with coaching duties to provide individualized training

While this camp is being held at Lowell, it is open to Home Schoolers,
and kids from other school districts.

For detailed information please send an EMAIL => kmcpheeters-neal@tricreek.k12.in.us

For those who are unaware, there is the Northwest Indiana Fencing Club located in St John, IN so if your child is interested in fencing as sport, they can also get lessons or practice at the NW Indiana Fencing Club, St John, IN In fact, taking the Lowell Fencing Camp would be a great prelude to anyone who might be interested in fencing, they could then follow up at the NWI Fencing Club.

There are 3 different weapons used in Sport Fencing. "Saber" is the FASTEST and MOST AGGRESSIVE of the 3 weapons used in fencing. "Foil" and "Epee," the other 2 weapons are slower and more deliberate in style and form. "Foil" is a dueling weapon of kings and their courts. "Epee" is modeled after fighting swords (think of the '3 Musketeers' movie). A typical "Saber" bout will take 45 to 90 seconds to complete while both "Foil" and "Epee" bouts may take closer to 3 minutes as the action is planned and deliberate. Students will pick 1 of the weapons and stick with it for the 4 day camp.

Below is my daughter in 2 different Great Lakes High School Conference bouts fencing "Saber," in both bouts she is the girl on the left side of the screen.

Having fenced myself for a number of years, I would heartily recommend anyone who has kids at the age for this camp to give it a try. Fencing is a great deal of fun and you can pick up the basics rather quickly.

Yup, its an interesting sport and one that is attractive to both athletes and NON-athletes alike. And kids in the JR HIGH to HIGH SCHOOL age range are the perfect target for starting fencing.

We have fencers at our club ranging in age from about 8 or 9 years old at the youngest to nearly 70 years old.

I've been working with one private high school for about 6 years, but then about 18 months ago I helped start up a fencing program at Lowell High School with 2 of the teachers (I'm not a teacher, just a creepy old man who hangs out at the school) and am the Saber coach for Lowell.

SPARE THE ROD - SPOIL THE CHILD

Bring me your kids, I'll be happy to beat them with a steel rod :):

Seriously, if you live in/near south Lake County and have kids of middle or high school age, consider this 4 day fencing camp for them for a summer, and potentially life-long activity.

BRING ME YOUR CHILDREN . . . I'm not just a creepy old man who hangs out at the high school.

    I'm much more than that.

I'm the guy who can teach your kid basic Saber fencing. A sport she/he can participate in for the rest of their life! Oh, and we also have a lady coach and there are a bunch of varsity student fencers who will be helping too. This will be a fun camp for your kids. We will be meeting at the Lowell High School athletic field house from 8am to Noon.

For detailed information send a PM to me or contact LHS teacher & RDFC head coach Kendra McPheeters at => kmcpheeters-neal@tricreek.k12.in.us

THERE ARE REAL WORLD REASONS TO WANT ME to beat your child with Sabers or Foils!

But understand that you may save your child's life by bringing them to this camp because Fencing is a "martial art" form that has some real life useful applications.

For example, if your child was visiting the Golden Temple in India when the sword fight between 2 Sikh casts broke out, your child would know what to do! Do your kids play too many video games?

Or sit on the couch watching movies?

Send them to me so I can dispel the myth of the Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber:
    light-saber-chopsticks--large-msg-13044684177.jpg

We can teach them how to use a real saber, or a real foil and they will spend at least 4 hours during their day without earphones, without sitting on the couch, and without pestering you!

Heck they might even break a sweat, or two, and they might have some fun doing it.

    A lifelong sport?

NO, A SPORT THAT WILL LAST FOR CENTURIES . . .

Its good to know that a sport that existed in the king's court prior to the French revolution will remain popular all the way into the 25th Century. What is unfortunate is that while classic fencing will persist, there will still be no cure for baldness in the 25th century.

NO TAX DOLLARS WILL BE USED TO FLAIL AT YOUR CHILDREN WITH STEEL RODS!

That's right folks, your tax dollars will not be used.

You get to pay us directly out of your pocket.

For just the tidy sum of $100 your hard earned dollars, we will take your child, beat, slash and poke them with metal sticks for 4 straight days. How much would that type of amusement normally cost you? Probably a few nights in jail?

As we are "coaches" we can get away with smacking your kids around. We can even get away with leaving bruises all over their bodies. Don't try that at home, DCFS will be on its way! Lie to them, tell them you are taking them to a party, then drive away laughing. Good times for all!

Hey guys, do you have a beautiful young daughter at home? Can't decide if you should lock her away in a Convent to keep her safe or if you should hire some armed guards to escort her around the school hallways to keep her safe from testosterone charged high school boys? Well men, I have an answer for you. Let us teach your daughter how to wield a sword. Schools may have banned guns and knives and even toaster pastry shaped like a weapon, but for some reason schools seem to increasingly embrace SWORDS!

So with the blessings of the school systems, your young and pure daughter can now defend herself from the unwanted advances of lecherous boys, and neuter them too!

Hey, they can't stay home and play with BARBIE & KEN forever. And let's face it, KEN is the only "safe" date your daughter may ever have. So give her the skills to turn any aggressive boy into a KEN.

Just sign your precious young lady up for the LOWELL FENCING CAMP and let us help her attain a level of self-empowerment that you had previously only dreamed of!

    I promise!

So your kid sits on the couch, has the body of a Sta-Puft Marshmallow, and his eyes are glued to the TV set where he acts out his life as a special forces commando or a Roman gladiator???

    We can fix that.

Let us toughen up his body with a little exercise.

Let us toughen up his mind.

If he's role playing so-called violent video games then he already has developed the mindset for strategy and clearly has the desire for combat.

We can put that desire to good use and teach him to be a real combatant, be it a gladiator or special-operator.

Soon, he will shrug off a sliver without tears.

Stubbed toe won't make him flinch.

Heck, even a simple flesh wound will be ignored.

On a serious note about Olympic style Sport Fencing, the one thing I can't stress enough if how I see kids change for the better when they become fencers. It is a sport that doesn't require the best athletes, but being athletic is an advantage. It is a sport that favors strategy over strength.

Shy and introverted kids become self-confident and show pride in their achievements. Those kids who were outsiders from all groups find a sport where they can excel. And those kids who are superb athletes when they come into fencing find that while they may quickly rise to the tops of their respective teams, there are always kids out there who are better, and they get a dose of reality on the fencing strip.

I think this graphic, while out of character with the humorous posts in this thread,
actually speaks volumes about the real sport:

Silent death: Mimes, more deadly than Ninjas.

Send you middle & high school aged children to the Lowell Red Devils Fencing Camp and they will never have to fear Mimes again. Or birthday clowns.
