I have a NIB stainless, ported, 4 inch sw500. My son, who is now 18, asked me the other day to shoot it. I looked into buying ammo and 20 rounds at Gander was 65 bucks!!!!!. I did go online and find them for 2 bucks a shot. Anyone where I can buy cheaper ammo? Also, have you ever shot one? We shoot our 44 magnum, but never the 50. A little intimidating to say the least.

    1. Anywhere but Gander Mountain, $2/round is typical @ the Indy 1500
    2. Yes, I've shot the ported 5" version. It's a handful, but not as violent as my .454 w/o compensation.
    3. Reload

not sure about the ammo, but I always recommend only loading a single shot the first (few) time(s) firing that gun as many people will bump fire a second round into the air/ceiling

Call Scroggins in Martinsville. I have purchased hundreds of 9mm, 38, & 40 reloads and have not had an issue with a single one of them. I imagine his 50's aren't much different.

BTW, I got to shoot one of those beasties last summer. It was a 10" though. I can only imagine what a 4" is like. Have fun my friend.

I have a 500 S&W in 4" as well id say the recoil is like 2 44 mags going off and as someone pointed out only load one first few times. Id check midway or able ammo and have fun!

    What loads are you shooting?

I have a 4 inch 500 magnum and have never personally seen anyone with any experience firing a handgun bump fire it. I have seen the YouTube videos, though. Of course, I don't shoot 500 or 700 grain loads out of mine.

I regularly shoot light loads, with 325 gr. bullets at about 1300 fps for 1400 ft/lbs of muzzle energy and heavier loads, 350 gr. at about 1700 fps, for about 2200 ft/lbs ME, and find the .500 very controllable, and with the light loads, pleasant and fun to shoot. It's certainly softer shooting than my 4 inch Ruger Redhawk in 44 magnum, with reasonable loads.

Can you buy or work up some 500 or 700 gr. elephant loads that'll will snap your forearm? Yes. With reasonably loaded rounds, the .500 is a blast to shoot and actually pretty soft shooting, given what it is.

not sure about the ammo, but I always recommend only loading a single shot the first (few) time(s) firing that gun as many people will bump fire a second round into the air/ceiling
