What tasks would a knife user prefer a 'tanto' blade? Other than personal preference due to looks, I'm sure there is a real purpose, I just can't figure it out.

A properly make tanto blade can penetrate an oil drum! (You know the big steel drum)

And it is my personal preference!!:D

sjstill: Always seemed more difficult to sharpen. But I'm kind of a sharpening putz...

I’ve tried … Cant sharpen a knife for nothing!!
I love benchmade , send it in with $5.00 and they sharpen it for ever!! Once they even fixed a chipped blade.

takes about 2 weeks so I have 2...:D

Tanto is my favorite, I usually have a tanto blade on me and some other blade as well. I am notorious for using knives as everything but cutting tools and the tanto tip is perfect for that!

I like the Tanto best by far for the looks and functionality. I agree that they are able to be used for a lot besides just cutting. I have a SOG Trident Tanto, KaBar K2 Tanto, CRKT KISS Tanto, and a Benchmade Tanto. Nothing super high-end (yet) but working on it...

Yep, Learned I liked using the Tanto style blade a couple years back. Unfortunatly I use mine for everything;screw driver, box opener, sometiemes even a prybar.
Thats why I love my S&W Special Forces!:D
Plus my new Buck ain't bad (don't know what model, recieved it as a gift).

Kershaw also will sharpen your knife for free, all you need to do is pay to ship it to them. They also have an awesome warranty.
