I was brought my wife's grandfathers Taurus 605. He is in a nursing home and a nurse or someone found his gun and he had to have someone come and get it. Apparently it is their policy and he is also kind of depressed. Anyway I told my MIL I would clean it up and keep it in the safe. It is a 1997 gun and probably never cleaned.

I took oil the grip off and it seems to be caked inside with a cosmoline or something similar. The stuff seems to be everywhere inside this thing. I haven't taken it apart yet because I've never taken a revolver apart, though it looks easy. My question is should I rip this thing apart and get rid of this gunk or is it still there for good reason? I'd like for my wife to use this for HD in he short term as she has expressed interest in a revolver. Figured I go get some 38s for her to shoot.

    Thanks in advance

I would....You never know when that "gunk" will get hard from time/dust/dirt".

Just take your time and put everything back in the same order they came out. Maybe videotape the process, then you have a record.

Took one side plate and the grip off and got it all cleaned up. Did have one pin fall out that I had to find out where it needed to go back to but not bad. And no more crap oozing out of the grip.

I think that must be the "grease" that Taurus use's at the factory, and it goes bad over time.

I cleaned up a Taurus 85 that had a horrid trigger. After a good cleaning, polishing a few VERY rough parts, and proper lubing, it made a huge difference in the trigger.

I've got a 605 and it's my go to pocket gun. The gunk that you speak of is in fact the factory grease that they use. I too stripped it and cleaned it all out and just oiled the internals. I take it down completely once a year to clean the pocket lint out and re-oil.
