You'll save yourself a LOT of raised blood pressure by not getting aggravated at those liberal arts majors who think their interpretation of something based on punctuation placement is more pertinent than historical context, associated writings of those who helped craft the Bill of Rights, and over two centuries of court rulings.

    Hey Ya'll,

You be careful about disparaging US LIBERAL ARTS majors!:stickpoke: We can come up with some dandy viewpoints from time to time...

If you anger us we will fart in your general direction!:D

    Regards,

    Doug

The purpose of the 'well regulated militia" was in part to protect the people from the government should it got out of hand. The National Guard and Reserve forces are controlled by the federal and state governments and are therefore part of the potential problem we might need to protect ourselves against.

First off the punctuation differs depending upon which copy you look at. Secondly, people conveniently forget all about 10 USC chapter 13. http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/10C13.txt This is my favorite argument when someone tries to tell me all about the 2nd being only for the military. They've never heard of it.

So I am assuming that now the definition of "man" has been broadened to include women in all of these historic documents?

Actually, "the 2nd Amendment doesn't GRANT me rights".

The 2nd Amendment simply states that the government won't infringe on my PRE-EXISTING right to keep and bear arms.

It doesn't GRANT me the right to keep and bear arms.

    There is a DISTINCT difference!

The Second Amendment does not grant you any rights, rather it merely recognizes what pre-existed the Constitution. In fact the Supreme Court has held so long ago.
The Second Amendment is an individual right. People=individual.

Has this person not read Heller? This question is long settled even before Heller.

District of Columbia v. Heller - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The militia means everyone, young and old, boys and men.

One of my favorite cases on "what is the militia" from the Supreme Court of Georgia:

No. 36.--Hawkins H. Nunn vs. The State of Georgia.

There is a really neat article somewhere on the interwebs that has been discussed on this forum before written by a linguistics specialist. He does a thorough analysis of the 2nd amendment and its wording to find exactly what is meant. I remember it being pretty amazing. Anyone have the link?

EDIT: I think it is here: http://www.largo.org/literary.html

EDIT 2: His modern way of writing it to maintain original meaning, but use modern language is:
Since a well-regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be abridged.

Absolutely correct. I was searching for this reply before I had to write it. I think we should become more like some Scandinavian countries and require that every household possess a firearm for the protection of all.
